Ranges are really two appliances sharing a cabinet, and they fail independently. The cooktop side — burners, igniters, spark modules, radiant elements — is cheap and fast to fix. The oven side is where the money is: bake elements are trivial, but electronic oven control boards and gas safety valves are the parts that push a quote past $400.

Temperature complaints deserve a thermometer before a technician. Ovens drift with age, and most models let you offset the calibration from the control panel in a few seconds. If a $12 oven thermometer shows you are within 25°F, the oven is behaving normally and the problem is the recipe, not the range.

13–15 years, and gas ranges frequently outlive that because their cooktop side is almost entirely mechanical. Electric ranges are limited by their control board rather than by anything you can see.

The self-clean cycle is the leading cause of premature range failure. It drives the cavity to around 900°F, which is exactly what cooks control boards, door lock motors and thermal fuses. Manual cleaning is genuinely gentler on the appliance than the feature built for the job.

When replacing beats repairing

Why is my oven not heating evenly?

Do I need a licensed technician for a gas range?
Yes. Every US state restricts gas appliance work — igniters, safety valves, supply connections — to licensed technicians. Electric elements, door hinges and control boards on the same range do not carry that restriction, but most states license appliance repair generally.
Is the self-clean cycle bad for my oven?

Why does my gas burner keep clicking?
