Repair or replace an ice maker

Two numbers, and they are not the same number
Every repair-or-replace answer is one of two tests. One is fixed against the price of a new unit and never moves. The other falls every year you own the appliance.

The stricter version is to spend no more than half of what the appliance is worth today, which is the ceiling the value estimator returns. At age zero the two rules give exactly the same number, because a brand-new unit is worth what a new unit costs. Every year after that they diverge: the price of a replacement stays where it is while the value of yours falls.

"Under" is a band wholly below $200, led here by thaw a frozen fill tube and clear the supply. "Straddles" is a band that crosses it, so where your quote lands inside them is the decision — water inlet valve, icemaker module or ejector assembly, mould thermostat or bin-level sensor and 1 other. "Over" means the cheapest version of the job already exceeds the line: complete in-fridge icemaker assembly and sealed-system work on a standalone machine. The pays-back column applies the stricter test to the midpoint of each band. None of this includes the diagnostic fee, which is charged for the visit and the diagnosis whether the verdict is good or bad. Many shops credit it against the repair if you approve the work the same day and many do not, so ask before the van is dispatched rather than after.
What makes this decision different on an ice maker
The method is the same on every appliance. What is not the same is which faults are expensive, what replacement actually involves, and how long the machine has left to earn a repair back.
This is the only entry on the site that is frequently a component of another appliance rather than an appliance in its own right, and that changes what replacement even means. Water quality decides the sequence here. Hard water scales the fill valve and the mould together, and a filter left in past its interval restricts flow until the valve is working against pressure it was not designed for. How to read this
Every ceiling on this page is half the value the estimator gives a unit of that age in excellent condition. Excellent is deliberately the generous end of the model — it values the appliance as it will be once the fault is fixed, which is what the repair is actually buying. Where the verdict flips
The model stops recommending repair outright at year 6 and starts recommending replacement at year 7. The $50–$100 diagnostic fee stays a small fraction of that ceiling across the whole of this appliance's expected life, which is one reason an ice maker is worth diagnosing properly rather than guessing at.
What the brand does to the line

What replacing an ice maker costs that the sticker does not
Every threshold on this page is built from $400 for the appliance. Getting an ice maker out and a new one in is not included in that, and on this appliance it is water supply and pressure that does most of the damage to the estimate.
Replacing an in-fridge module is a part swap and a supply check, and that is genuinely the whole job. A standalone undercounter machine is a different proposition: it needs a water supply, a drain, and in most installations a dedicated circuit, and it is fitted into a cabinet opening with clearances that matter because the unit rejects heat from the front. A gravity drain that was never quite right is the most common reason a replacement performs no better than the machine it replaced.

- A standalone machine needs sealed-system work at year eight or later.
- The bin, auger or dispenser chute is cracked, which usually means a whole-door part.
When it stops being a cost decision
A valve that will not close fully can freeze the fill tube solid overnight and keep doing it, and on an in-fridge maker that means water finding its way somewhere it should not be. If you suspect it, shut the supply rather than waiting for the appointment.
Three things override the arithmetic entirely. Safety is not a cost decision: an appliance that is a fire, gas, water or electrical hazard comes out of service regardless of what a repair would cost. A part that is discontinued ends the conversation whatever the quote was going to be. And a second failure on the same machine inside a year is telling you about the rest of the components, not about the one that just broke.

Ask whether the machine fills with water at all. Fills but never harvests points at the module, the thermostat or the sensor — the expensive half. Never fills points at the supply, the filter or the inlet valve, which is both the cheaper half and the more likely one.
Then ask for a written estimate with parts and labour as separate lines, and hold the total against two numbers: $200, and the ceiling for your ice maker's actual age — $100 at 4 years, $50 at 8. A quote between the two is where the decision is genuinely yours, and it is worth doing on a machine you have looked after and worth walking away from on one you have not.
