Dryers are mechanically simple, which is good news: there are only about five things that make noise, and each one makes a distinct sound. A steady squeal that rises with the drum is a roller or the idler pulley. A rhythmic thump once per drum revolution is a belt or a flat-spotted roller. A metallic scrape is the drum contacting the bulkhead. A rattle that comes and goes is something in the blower. Identify the sound first, then open the machine once.

Step by step
Characterise the noise before you open anything
Run the dryer empty and listen carefully. Does the sound track the drum speed or the motor speed? Is it constant, or once per revolution? Does it change when you press gently on the front of the drum through the door opening? A squeal that quietens when you push up on the drum is a rear bearing or roller. A rattle that only appears at startup and shutdown is usually in the blower.
Turn the drum by hand with the power off
Unplug the machine, open the door and rotate the drum slowly by hand through several full turns. You are feeling for a catch, a rough spot, or a point where it resists. A flat-spotted drum roller gives you a distinct bump at the same point every revolution. Grinding you can feel through your hands means a bearing has gone dry, not just noisy.
Inspect the drum support rollers
Most dryers ride the drum on two to four rollers with shafts and small bearings. Take the front panel and drum out, then spin each roller by hand: it should turn silently, freely, and with no side-to-side wobble. Check the shafts for grooving. Always replace rollers as a complete set with new tri-rings or clips, and clean the shafts before reassembly — a single new roller against three worn ones will be squealing again within months.
Check the idler pulley
The idler pulley tensions the drive belt and is the single most common source of a dryer squeal. Spin it by hand — it should rotate freely and silently. Any grinding, roughness or play means it is done. Because it is nearly always accessed at the same time as the belt and rollers, most people replace the belt, idler and rollers together as a kit and get the whole drive system back to new for around $50 in parts.
Inspect the drum glides and felt seal
The front of the drum rides on plastic or nylon glides against the front bulkhead, with a felt seal to stop air bypass. When the glides wear through, metal rides on metal and you get a scraping or grinding noise that is louder at the front. Worn glides also drop the drum enough to let it rub, which shreds the felt seal and hurts drying performance at the same time.
Identify how your drum is supported at the rear
Dryers differ here, and the difference decides whether a squeal is a ten-minute job or a teardown. Some designs carry the rear of the drum on the same kind of rollers used at the front, which are easy to reach and cheap. Others let the rear of the drum ride directly on a felt or graphite-impregnated seal against the rear bulkhead, so when that felt wears through you get metal on metal and a harsh grinding that is loudest at the back. A third design hangs the drum on a centre shaft running in a bushing or a ball-and-socket hitch on the rear panel, packed with grease that eventually dries out. Test which one you have by lifting the drum gently from inside the door opening while a helper runs the machine for a moment: a squeal that changes pitch or goes away when the drum is lifted is coming from the rear support, not from the belt or the blower.
Check the blower wheel and the housing
A rattle or an intermittent tinkling is very often a coin, button or hairpin in the blower housing. Remove the blower cover and look. Also check the blower wheel itself for cracked vanes and for a hub that has loosened on the motor shaft — a wheel that wobbles produces a rumble you will hear right through the cycle and it kills airflow. One useful distinction while you are listening: a soft thump that arrives once per drum revolution and never changes is usually the joint or splice in the drive belt passing over the idler, which is normal on a worn belt and harmless, whereas a harder knock you can also feel through the drum is a roller that has developed a flat spot.
Assess the motor bearings
If the rollers, idler, glides and blower are all sound and it still hums or growls, spin the motor shaft by hand with the belt removed. A motor with dry bearings feels notchy and sounds like a rumble that is present the instant the machine starts, independent of the drum. Motors are not usually serviceable — they are replaced as a unit, typically $80–$180 for the part.

When to call a pro
If the noise turns out to be the motor and you are not comfortable dismantling the cabinet to reach it, or if the rear drum bearing on a design that uses a shaft-and-bushing has failed, the labour is significant enough that a technician often makes sense. On gas dryers, anything that requires moving or disconnecting the burner assembly is licensed work in most jurisdictions.
