Washer Won't Spin — Diagnostic Guide

A washer that fills and washes but leaves the load sopping wet has a spin fault, and the cause falls into one of three buckets: the machine is refusing to spin on purpose, something in the drive train has broken, or it cannot drain and therefore will not spin. Work in that order — the safety-interlock causes are free to check and account for most of these failures.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the machine drains first

    Almost every washer refuses to spin while water is still in the tub, because spinning a full tub at 1,000 rpm would throw water everywhere. If there is standing water at the end of the cycle, you do not have a spin problem — you have a drain problem, and the spin will come back on its own once the drain is clear. Check the drain hose and pump filter before touching anything spin-related.

  2. Redistribute the load and try again

    One heavy item — a bath mat, a comforter, a pair of jeans — migrating to one side will trip the out-of-balance sensor, and modern machines respond by slowing the spin or abandoning it entirely rather than shaking themselves apart. Open the door, spread the load evenly around the drum, and restart on a spin-only cycle. If it now spins normally, the machine was doing its job.

  3. Test the lid switch or door lock

    Top-loaders use a lid switch; front-loaders use a door lock and latch assembly. Either one failing tells the control board the machine is unsafe to spin. On a top-loader, press the switch plunger by hand with the lid open and listen for a distinct click, then unplug the machine and check it for continuity with a multimeter. On a front-loader, listen for the lock to engage a few seconds into the cycle — no click means the lock assembly or its wiring has failed. This is the single most common cause of a no-spin.

  4. Check the drive belt

    Unplug the washer and get to the belt — on most front-loaders it is behind the rear panel, on many top-loaders underneath. A belt that is snapped, glazed, or so loose you can twist it more than half a turn will let the motor run while the drum sits still. That symptom is distinctive: the machine sounds like it is working normally but the drum never moves. Belts are cheap and are the most common mechanical no-spin failure on belt-driven machines.

  5. Inspect the motor coupler (direct-drive top-loaders)

    Older Whirlpool, Kenmore, Roper and Estate direct-drive top-loaders use a three-piece motor coupler — two plastic-and-metal drive forks with a rubber isolator between them. The isolator shreds with age, especially on machines that get overloaded. The tell is a motor you can hear running with no agitation and no spin at all. It is a well-documented repair, the part is inexpensive, and it is a common reason a perfectly good machine gets thrown out.

  6. Check the shift actuator (modern top-loaders)

    Newer Whirlpool-family top-loaders replaced the mechanical transmission clutch with an electronic shift actuator that switches the drive between agitate and spin. When it fails, the machine agitates fine but will not engage spin, and it usually sets a fault code. The actuator sits under the machine on the drive shaft, held by a few screws. Check your model's service mode to pull the stored code before you order the part.

  7. Read the error code

    Every machine built in the last fifteen years stores fault codes, and the codes narrow this down faster than any physical test. Get into diagnostic mode using the sequence in your owner's manual or on the tech sheet tucked behind the front panel or console, and write down what it reports. Codes pointing at the door lock, the motor control, or the speed sensor each send you to a completely different part — guessing without the code is how people end up with a pile of parts and an unfixed washer.

When to call a pro

If the belt, coupler, lid switch and actuator all check out, the fault is in the motor, the motor control board, or the transmission. Motor control boards run $150–$350 in parts and transmission work on a top-loader often costs more than the machine is worth. A grinding or scraping sound during what spin you do get usually means the tub bearing has failed, which on most front-loaders requires splitting the outer tub — a repair that routinely runs $400–$600 and is frequently not worth doing on a machine over eight years old.
