A top-loader that fills, drains and spins but leaves the load sitting still has a drive fault, and the pattern of what does and does not move narrows it before you pick up a tool. If the machine spins normally but the agitator never moves, the break is between the transmission output and the agitator itself — the dogs, the splines, the drive block. If it neither agitates nor spins while the motor clearly runs, the break is further back at the coupler, the belt or the transmission. Establish which of those you have before ordering anything.
Read this first
- Unplug the washer before removing the console, a panel, or the agitator.
- Never reach into a moving tub to see whether the agitator is turning. Watch through the lid glass or use the lid switch bypass procedure in your service documentation, and keep your hands out.
- A washer full of water is extremely heavy. Drain it before tipping or moving the machine.
- Tipping a washer back to reach the underside is a two-person job.
Step by step
Confirm your machine actually has an agitator
This is not a joke step. Many current top-loaders use a low-profile impeller plate in the bottom of the tub rather than a tall centre post, and their wash action is a slow rocking of the whole drum with very little visible movement of the clothes. If your tub has a flat disc rather than a column, it is working as designed and the load will look almost undisturbed through the lid. Compare it against a video of your model number before you decide it is broken.
Work out exactly what does and does not move
Run a short cycle with the machine empty and a few inches of water in it, and watch. Note three things: does the motor run during the wash portion, does the agitator move at all, and does the machine spin normally afterward. A machine that spins fine but never agitates is a completely different repair from one that does neither, and the two share almost no parts. Write down what you saw.
Feel whether the agitator top moves and the bottom does not
Most tall agitators are two pieces: an upper section that ratchets to drive clothes down, and a lower barrel bolted to the drive shaft. Grip the top section and try to turn it clockwise and anticlockwise by hand. If it turns freely in both directions with no ratcheting click, the agitator dogs inside the top have worn out. That is the classic cause of a machine that sounds like it is washing while the clothes drift on the surface.
Replace the agitator dogs
Pop the softener cap or the plastic cover in the top of the agitator, remove the bolt underneath, and lift the upper section off. Inside you will find a cam and four small plastic dogs in a carrier. Worn dogs are rounded on the driving face and often cracked. Kits with the dogs, the cam and a new cap run under $25 and go back together in the reverse order. Clean the splines while you have it apart and do not overtighten the bolt on reassembly.
Check the drive block and the agitator splines
With the whole agitator off, look at the metal or plastic drive block on top of the transmission shaft, and at the matching splines inside the base of the agitator. Both wear round, and a rounded pair lets the shaft turn while the agitator stands still — the same symptom as bad dogs, from a different part. Fit the agitator back on without the bolt, hold it, and have someone start a wash cycle briefly: if the shaft turns inside a stationary agitator, one of those two splined faces is finished.
Inspect the motor coupler on direct-drive machines
Older Whirlpool-family direct-drive top-loaders use a three-piece coupler between motor and transmission, with a rubber isolator that shreds with age and overloading. The tell is a motor you can hear running with no agitation and no spin at all. It sits under the machine on the motor shaft, the part is inexpensive, and it is one of the most common reasons a sound washer gets scrapped. Check for black rubber crumbs in the base of the cabinet.
Check the belt on belt-driven machines
If your machine drives the transmission through a belt rather than a coupler, get the rear or lower panel off and look at it. A snapped belt gives you a running motor and a completely inert tub. A belt that is glazed or so slack you can twist it more than half a turn will slip under the load of a full tub while looking fine on an empty one. Belts are cheap and are worth replacing on sight if the machine has any age on it.
Read the code before suspecting the transmission
Put the machine into its diagnostic mode using the sequence in your owner's manual or on the tech sheet behind the console or front panel, and note any stored fault. Modern top-loaders with an electronic shift actuator will usually set a code when the drive cannot engage, and that turns a transmission-versus-actuator guess into a specific part. Do this before you commit to anything expensive, because the actuator is a modest part and the transmission is not.

When to call a pro
If the dogs, drive block, coupler and belt all check out and the transmission output shaft simply does not turn under power, the transmission or the drive motor has failed. On most top-loaders that repair costs more than the machine is worth, so get a quote and weigh it against a replacement before authorising anything. A grinding or knocking noise during the wash stroke points the same way. Any repair where the outer tub has to come out is worth handing over — it is heavy, awkward and easy to damage on reassembly.
