Water problems have a short list of causes and they are the same across a dispenser, an ice maker and a washer fill: the supply is off or restricted, a filter or inlet screen is clogged, a line has frozen, or the inlet valve has failed. Check them in that order. A six-month-old water filter and a partly closed saddle valve account for a surprising share of calls where a new valve gets fitted for nothing.

Read this first

  • Never thaw a frozen water line with a heat gun, a torch or boiling water. A hair dryer on low is the only safe tool.
  • Shut the supply valve before opening any water fitting, and unplug the appliance before testing a valve solenoid.
  • Do not overtighten compression fittings on a fridge supply line. A quarter turn past hand-tight is enough; cranking them splits the ferrule and creates the leak you were trying to avoid.

What it usually means

Every one of these appliances takes water through a solenoid valve that only opens when energised. That gives you a clean diagnostic split: if you can hear the valve buzz and no water arrives, the restriction is upstream or inside the valve screen. If there is no buzz at all, the valve is not being told to open, which points at a switch, a sensor, or the control.

Freezing is the cause people miss. A refrigerator that dispenses ice fine but no water has almost always frozen the water tube in the door, and the underlying reason is a fresh-food compartment running below about 34°F. Thawing the tube fixes it for a week; fixing the compartment temperature fixes it for good. The same logic applies to a slow ice maker in an over-cold cabinet.

What to check first

  1. Confirm the supply is genuinely open

    Follow the line back to its shutoff — a saddle valve or quarter-turn stop under the sink or behind the appliance — and open it fully. Then check pressure: a fridge needs roughly 20 psi minimum, and homes on reverse-osmosis systems are often below that without a booster pump.

  2. Change the water filter, then bypass it

    Filters are rated for about six months or 200–300 gallons and choke flow to nothing when overdue. Fit a fresh cartridge and purge two gallons. If nothing changes, fit the bypass plug — if water then flows freely, the cartridge was the problem, which is common with off-brand filters that are dimensionally close but not exact.

  3. Clear the inlet screens on a washer

    Shut both taps, unscrew the fill hoses at the machine, and pull the small mesh screens in the valve inlets. Sediment collects there and starves the fill. Flush the hoses into a bucket at the same time to confirm both hot and cold actually run.

  4. Thaw a frozen door line

    If ice dispenses but water does not, warm the tube where it enters the door with a hair dryer on low for ten minutes. Never use a heat gun or a flame. Then raise the fresh-food setting a couple of degrees, or it will refreeze within days.

  5. Check the ice maker's own switches

    Confirm the fill bar is down or the on/off switch is set to make ice, and that the bin is seated — many models will not cycle with the bin out of position. Then check the freezer temperature: ice makers are specified for 0–5°F and output falls off sharply above that, so a warm freezer looks exactly like a dead ice maker.

  6. Listen to the inlet valve

    Press the dispenser pad or start a fill and put an ear near the valve at the back of the machine. A buzz with no water means the valve is energised but silted up or starved. Silence means it is not being commanded, which changes the diagnosis entirely.
