Small, hollow or half-formed cubes almost always mean one thing: the ice maker is not receiving its full charge of water on each fill. It runs its cycle on a timer, so if the valve only delivers half the water in the allotted seconds, you get half a cube — every time, forever, until the restriction is cleared. Slow production is the same story stretched over a day. Both point at flow, not at a broken ice maker.

Step by step
Know what normal output actually is
Expectations cause a lot of these calls. A typical built-in refrigerator ice maker produces about eight cubes per harvest and runs a cycle roughly every 90 minutes, which works out to somewhere in the region of three to four pounds a day — enough for ordinary use, and nowhere near enough for a party. It also takes a full 24 hours after any change or after a new installation to reach steady output. Measure over a day, not over an afternoon.
Time the water dispenser
This is the single most useful test. Hold a measuring cup under the water dispenser and run it for exactly ten seconds. A healthy system delivers somewhere around two thirds of a cup to a full cup in that time. Noticeably less confirms a flow restriction, and everything below is about finding where. If the dispenser flows strongly but the ice is still small, the restriction is between the valve and the mould rather than upstream.
Replace the water filter
A filter past its six-month or 200-to-300-gallon rating is the most likely restriction in the system, and it strangles ice production long before anyone notices the dispenser slowing. Fit a genuine or verified-compatible cartridge, then purge two gallons through the dispenser to clear trapped air. Retime the dispenser afterwards — if flow improves, you have your answer.
Check the supply line behind the fridge
Pull the refrigerator out and follow the water line. A quarter-inch plastic line crushed against the wall when the fridge was last pushed back, or kinked in a tight loop, cuts flow dramatically. Straighten or replace any crimped section, and leave a gentle loop of slack so the line is not stressed the next time the fridge moves. Also confirm the shutoff valve is fully open rather than half turned.
Check for a partially frozen fill tube
A fill tube with a ring of ice in it but not fully blocked passes some water and not all — which is exactly the signature of consistently undersized cubes. Pull the ice bin and look into the tube at the back of the ice maker with a flashlight. Thaw any ice with a hair dryer on low. If it comes back, the root cause is usually a slow fill dribbling and freezing rather than pulsing cleanly, which sends you back to pressure and the filter.
Verify the freezer is cold enough
The mould thermostat needs to reach about 15°F to trigger a harvest, and a freezer sitting at 10 to 15°F will cycle far more slowly than one at 0°F. Put a thermometer in the freezer and read it after eight hours. Also check nothing is blocking the freezer's air vents, and that the ice maker compartment on French-door models with the ice maker in the fresh food door is getting its dedicated cold air duct — that duct icing over is a known cause of slow ice on those designs.
Check the household and RO pressure
Refrigerators want 40 to 120 psi and will not work properly below about 20 psi. If your fridge is fed from a reverse-osmosis system, that is very often the whole story: RO tanks deliver well below what an ice maker needs unless a permeate pump or booster pump is fitted. Whole-house filters and undersink filters that have not been changed in years cause the same problem. Test the pressure at a nearby tap, or fit a gauge to the line.
Keep the door closed and stop scooping
Finally, the behavioural half. Every door opening warms the freezer and delays the next harvest, and an ice bin emptied for a cooler will take the better part of a day to refill at three to four pounds a day. If your household genuinely needs more than that, no repair will provide it — a standalone or undercounter ice machine is the answer, not a fridge ice maker running perfectly.

When to call a pro
If flow at the dispenser is strong, the filter is fresh, the fill tube is clear and the freezer holds 0°F but the cubes are still undersized, the inlet valve is not opening fully or the ice maker's fill timing has drifted, and both are worth a technician's measurement before you buy parts. If the freezer cannot reach 0°F, that is a refrigeration fault first — and any sealed-system work requires EPA Section 608 certification. Low household water pressure is a plumbing issue rather than an appliance one.
