Cubes that fuse into a single lump are telling you that the ice is partially melting and refreezing, and there are only a handful of reasons that happens. Either the freezer is not cold enough, warm humid air is reaching the bin, water is dribbling into the bin between cycles, or the ice simply is not being used and has had months to slowly sinter together. None of them means the ice maker is broken.
Read this first
- Unplug the appliance before removing the ice maker or working near the fill tube.
- Never chip ice off the mould or the bin with a screwdriver, knife or ice pick — you will crack the plastic or puncture something you cannot repair.
- Use a hair dryer on low to thaw, never a heat gun.
- A bin welded solid can be surprisingly heavy. Lift it with both hands and expect meltwater.
Step by step
Understand what is actually happening
Ice at freezer temperature slowly sublimates — the surface turns directly to vapour — and that vapour refreezes on the neighbouring cube, welding the two together at their contact points. Any brief warming accelerates it enormously, because a thin film of meltwater between two cubes freezes into a solid bond. So clumping is a symptom of temperature instability or of ice sitting untouched, not of a mechanical fault.
Measure the freezer temperature
Put an appliance thermometer between two packages in the middle of the load and read it after eight hours. You want 0°F. A freezer sitting at 10 to 15°F will produce cubes that clump within days, and it also makes ice slowly, which compounds the problem. If the freezer cannot hold 0°F, that is your real fault and fixing it fixes the ice — check the condenser coils, the fans and the door seal first.
Check the door seal and the door habits
Every door opening pushes warm, humid room air across the ice bin, and a leaking gasket does it continuously. Close the door on a dollar bill at six points around the perimeter and pull; anywhere it slides out freely is leaking. On French-door models where the ice maker lives in the fresh food door, check that door's seal specifically. Also count the openings — a freezer opened twenty times a day will always clump more than one opened twice.
Look for a valve that dribbles instead of pulsing
An inlet valve that no longer closes fully lets a trickle of water into the mould between harvests. That water runs into the bin, freezes around the existing cubes, and cements the whole lot together into the characteristic solid slab with cube shapes visible in it. Shut the household supply valve for a few hours as a test: if the bin stays loose, the valve is weeping and needs replacing.
Check the bin auger and the dispenser chute flap
On through-the-door dispenser models, the chute is closed by a small flap that should seal when not in use. If that flap is held open by a stray cube, if its seal has hardened, or if the chute duct has iced up, room air blows straight onto the ice every time the fridge runs. Look up into the chute with a flashlight, clear any ice, and check the flap swings shut cleanly under its own spring.
Empty, thaw and restart the bin
Take the bin out, dump the block into the sink, and let any remaining ice melt rather than attacking it. Wash the bin in warm soapy water, dry it completely, and refit it. Starting from a genuinely empty, dry bin matters, because a single frozen lump left in the corner becomes the seed for the next block. Give it 24 hours and inspect before deciding whether anything you changed worked.
Use it, or turn it off
The honest answer for a lot of households is behavioural. A bin that turns over every week or two never clumps. A bin that fills once and sits will always clump eventually, no matter how well the appliance works. If you use very little ice, switch the ice maker off and make ice on demand, or empty the bin into a sealed freezer bag which keeps the cubes separated from circulating air. Shaking the bin every few days works too and costs nothing.

When to call a pro
Call a technician if the freezer cannot reach 0°F after you have cleaned the coils, confirmed the fans run and checked the seal, since that points at a defrost fault or a sealed-system problem — and sealed-system work legally requires EPA Section 608 certification. Bring one in too if the inlet valve is new and the mould still overfills, which points at the ice maker module's fill timing. Clumping alone, with a freezer holding 0°F and a bin in regular use, rarely justifies a service call.
