Garbage Disposal repair cost
Garbage disposals are the cheapest appliance on this site to replace and one of the most commonly repaired unnecessarily. Two of the three most frequent complaints — a jam and a tripped reset — cost nothing to fix yourself with a hex wrench that came in the box. The rest usually comes down to where exactly the water is coming from.

How much does garbage disposal repair cost?
Most garbage disposal repairs land between $85–$250 for parts and labour together, on top of a $40–$90 diagnostic fee that many shops credit against the repair if you approve the work the same day.
Clearing a jam, re-sealing the sink flange and replacing a discharge gasket are the low end. A supplied-and-fitted replacement unit is the middle, and it is the standard answer to a leak from the body or a dead motor. Electrical work on a dedicated circuit is priced separately and by an electrician, not an appliance shop.
- Cheapest priced job
- $70–$130
- Dearest priced job
- $250–$450
- Replace above
- $100
Cheapest priced job: Clear a jam and reset. Dearest: New 3/4–1 HP disposal, supplied and fitted. These are typical national ranges for the job, not quotes. Local rates vary and a written estimate for your own appliance is the only figure that binds anyone.
Garbage Disposal repair cost by job
8 named garbage disposal jobs, each priced as a typical range covering parts and labour on a mainstream freestanding unit. These run roughly in the order a technician works through them, which is why clear a jam and reset leads rather than the cheapest line.
| Job | Typical cost | What moves the number |
|---|---|---|
| Clear a jam and reset | $70–$130 | Often free to do yourself with a 1/4-inch hex wrench. |
| Re-seal the sink flange | $100–$180 | New plumber's putty and remounting. |
| Replace the discharge tube or gasket set | $90–$170 | The usual fix for a leak below the unit but above the housing. |
| Switch or wall-plug replacement | $100–$200 | For a unit that is completely silent with a working reset. |
| New 1/2 HP disposal, supplied and fitted | $180–$350 | The standard answer for a housing leak or a dead motor. |
| New 3/4–1 HP disposal, supplied and fitted | $250–$450 | Worth the upgrade if the old one jammed constantly. |
| Add or reroute a dishwasher inlet connection | $80–$180 | Only if the drain plug was never knocked out. |
| Dedicated circuit or outlet work | $180–$400 | Licensed electrician; priced separately from the appliance. |
Ranges cover parts and labour on a mainstream garbage disposal in a standard installation. A built-in, stacked or luxury unit sits above them, sometimes well above, because the access time and the parts channel are both different — a $200 mainstream replacement and a luxury equivalent do not have the same repair economics. Where a job is licensed work — gas, sealed refrigeration systems, or fixed wiring — the range assumes a correctly certified technician, because there is no legal cheaper version of it.
What drives the price on a garbage disposal
Two households with the identical garbage disposal fault can be quoted very differently, and the reasons are specific to this appliance rather than generic. These three account for most of the spread.
- Where the leak actually is
- This is the whole diagnosis. A drip at the discharge elbow is a gasket. A leak at the top flange is the sink mount and plumber's putty. Water from the seam of the body itself is the motor seal, and that means a new unit — the housing is not serviceable. Three very different prices for one symptom.
- Whether the flange can be reused
- Fitting the same brand of replacement usually lets a plumber reuse the existing sink mounting assembly, which turns a two-hour job into a short one. Switching brands often means the whole flange comes out and gets re-bedded. Ask for both prices.
- What is behind the switch
- A disposal that is completely silent with a working reset button may be the switch, the outlet, or the circuit — not the appliance at all. If the fix turns out to be a dedicated circuit or an outlet under the sink, that is licensed electrical work quoted separately from anything to do with the disposal.
The cheap fix mistaken for an expensive one
The jam, and it is free. A unit that hums but will not turn is jammed, not dead. Kill the power, work the quarter-inch hex socket in the underside of the base back and forth, remove the obstruction with tongs, and press the reset button. Most disposals ship with the wrench taped to the side. Never put a hand into the chamber.
Where the labour actually goes
On a disposal the appliance is cheap and the position is awkward. Almost all of the cost of a replacement is working on your back in a sink cabinet, disconnecting a dishwasher inlet and a drain elbow, and holding a heavy unit overhead while the mount engages. That is why supplying and fitting a new unit is quoted well above the price of the unit itself.
DIY versus pro, fault by fault
The same 6 garbage disposal faults priced both ways. The DIY column is the part, assuming you diagnosed it correctly. The pro column includes the trip, the diagnosis, the hour and a warranty on the work.
| Fault | Job | DIY parts | Quoted pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garbage Disposal Jammed | easy15–30 minutes | $0 | $100–$350 |
| Garbage Disposal Leaking | moderate30–90 minutes | $4–$35 | $100–$300 |
| Garbage Disposal Won't Turn On | easy15–45 minutes | $0–$55 | $100–$300 |
| Garbage Disposal Smells | easy20–45 minutes | $0–$28 | $100–$250 |
| Garbage Disposal Draining Slowly or Backing Up | moderate45–90 minutes | $0–$35 | $125–$350 |
| Garbage Disposal Loud, Rattling or Screeching | moderate20–60 minutes | $0–$40 | $100–$300 |
How far a homeowner can take this
Clearing a jam, pressing the reset, replacing a splash guard, and swapping a discharge gasket are all straightforward homeowner jobs with the power off at the breaker. The line is the electrical connection and the sink flange seal. A badly bedded flange leaks into the cabinet slowly and you will not notice until the base swells.
What the DIY column does not include
Your time, the tools, and the cost of being wrong. Buying the correct part needs the model number off the tag on the garbage disposal, and a part fitted for a fault that was something else is money gone — most suppliers will not take back an electrical part once it has been installed. 4 of the 6 parts below need nothing more than a screwdriver, but knowing which one to buy is the hard half. If you are not confident in the diagnosis, the $40–$90 diagnostic fee is the cheaper purchase.
What the parts cost on their own
6 garbage disposal parts at typical retail for the part alone — no labour, no shipping, no diagnosis. 4 of them are rated easy to fit. This is the number to hold a garbage disposal quote against.
| Part | Typical retail | Install | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Splash Guard | $8–$28 | easy | 5–10 years |
| Discharge Tube and Gasket | $8–$30 | easy | 5–12 years |
| Sink Mounting Assembly | $15–$50 | moderate | 10+ years |
| Jam Wrench | $5–$15 | easy | Tool, not a wear part |
| Batch-Feed Stopper | $15–$55 | easy | 5–12 years |
| Replacement Unit | $90–$380 | moderate | 8–15 years |
Every garbage disposal part priced here falls between $5–$380 for the component alone. Set that against the 8 job ranges above and the difference is the trip, the diagnosis and the access. Knowing the split does not make a garbage disposal quote wrong — it tells you whether a second opinion is worth paying the $40–$90 diagnostic fee twice.
When replacing the garbage disposal wins
The arithmetic first — a $200 appliance with a 10-year life — then the cases where the arithmetic is not the whole answer.
New unit
$200
Typical price for a mainstream garbage disposal. A budget brand runs below it, a premium or built-in model well above.
Replace above
$100
Half the price of a new garbage disposal. A quote above this usually means replacement is the better spend — that is 3 of the 8 jobs listed above.
Expected life
10 yr
8–12 years. Horsepower is the biggest variable — a 1/2 HP unit under heavy use wears out years before a 3/4 HP unit doing the same work.
Cost per year new
$20
New price spread over expected life. If a repair buys more years than it costs at this rate, the repair is winning.
Replace a garbage disposal when
- It leaks from the bottom seam of the housing — that seal is not a serviceable part.
- The motor is dead and the unit is past year eight.
- Any repair quote approaches $150, roughly half the fitted price of a new mid-range unit.
- It jams weekly — that is an undersized unit for your household, not a fault.
The cost read on this appliance
Replacement wins on a disposal more often than on any other appliance here, simply because a new unit is inexpensive. A leaking body, a dead motor, or a unit that jams constantly are all replace cases — and if it jammed constantly, that is the moment to price the larger motor rather than the identical one.
If the repair quote is more than half the price of an equivalent new unit, replacement is usually the better spend. Below half, repair almost always wins on cost per remaining year of service. Then check the age against expected lifespan. An appliance past roughly three-quarters of its expected life has little runway left to earn back a large repair, so the threshold drops as the machine gets older — on an old unit, a repair at a third of new price can still be the wrong call.
Early failures skew this. Fibrous waste is what ends disposals early. Celery, corn husks, onion skins and artichoke leaves wrap around the impeller instead of shredding. Grease is the other one: it congeals downstream and turns a working disposal into a permanently slow drain.
Value my garbage disposalBefore you call for a garbage disposal quote
A garbage disposal quote is only as good as the information behind it, and 110 businesses here list this appliance. Have these ready and the first visit is far more likely to be the only visit.
The one question worth answering first
Does it hum, or is it completely silent? A hum means jammed and is very likely free to fix yourself. Silence with the reset button already pressed means power, switch or motor — and that is a real service call.
- Whether it hums, is silent, or runs normally but leaks.
- Exactly where the water appears — sink flange, discharge pipe, or the bottom of the housing.
- Whether you have already pressed the red reset button on the base.
- The brand and horsepower, printed on the side label.
- Whether a dishwasher drains into it.
Then ask every shop the same four questions: what is the diagnostic fee, is it credited if I approve the repair today, do you carry parts for this brand, and how long is the warranty on the work. Those four answers explain most of the spread between quotes, and none of them require the technician to have seen the appliance.
