There is one question that splits this diagnosis in half: does it hum, or is it silent? A disposal that hums but will not spin is jammed, and the fix is the hex wrench in the base. A disposal that makes no sound at all is not getting power, and the cause is almost always the reset button, the breaker, or the switch — not the motor. Work the electrical chain from the unit outward and you will usually find it in ten minutes.

- Never put your hand inside the grinding chamber, powered or not.
- Turn off the wall switch and unplug the disposal or switch off its breaker before working under the sink.
- If the disposal is hardwired rather than plugged in, treat any work inside its wiring box as an electrician's job unless you are confident testing the circuit dead.
- Water pooling under a sink around an electrical connection is a shock hazard — dry the area before you start.
Step by step
Press the reset button
Reach under the sink and feel the underside of the disposal for a small red or black button in the centre. That is the motor overload protector, and it trips whenever the motor stalls, overheats, or draws too much current — which happens every time someone jams it and walks away. If it has popped, it stands proud by a few millimetres. Press it firmly until it clicks and stays in. If it will not stay in, let the motor cool for fifteen minutes and try again.
Check the breaker and the outlet
Look at the panel for a tripped breaker on the kitchen circuit — push it fully off, then firmly back on, because a partially tripped breaker can look closed and pass no current. Then, if the disposal plugs into an outlet under the sink, test that outlet with a tester or a lamp. Kitchen outlets are usually GFCI-protected, and the GFCI that feeds it may be somewhere entirely different, such as a garage or bathroom.
Check the wall switch and any air switch
The switch itself fails, and it is a cheap part. If you have a standard toggle or rocker on the wall, listen for the click and, with the breaker off, test it for continuity in each position. If you have a button on the countertop instead, that is an air switch — it pushes a puff of air down a small tube to a control box under the sink. Check that tube is still connected at both ends; a tube that has popped off gives you a button that does absolutely nothing.
Batch-feed models: check the stopper
A batch-feed disposal only runs when its stopper is inserted and turned, because a magnet in the stopper closes a switch. If the stopper has been lost, swapped for a generic sink plug, or its magnet has weakened, the unit is dead by design. Try the correct stopper for your model, and rotate it fully — some designs need a specific alignment. This is one of the most common causes of a batch-feed unit that appears to have failed.
Listen carefully — silence versus hum
With the power restored, flip the switch and put your ear near the unit. A hum with no rotation means the motor is energised and something is jamming the flywheel; stop, kill the power, and work through the jam procedure with the hex wrench instead. Complete silence means no power is reaching the motor, or the motor windings have failed open. That distinction decides everything that follows.
Free the flywheel with the hex wrench
Even on a silent unit this is worth doing, because a seized flywheel can trip the overload before the motor makes any noise at all. Kill the power at the switch and the breaker, insert a 1/4-inch Allen key into the hex socket in the centre of the disposal's base, and work it firmly back and forth until the flywheel turns freely through full revolutions in both directions. Then press the reset button again and retest.
Confirm power at the unit before condemning it
If the breaker is on, the reset holds, the switch tests good and it is still silent, the last check is whether voltage actually arrives at the disposal. On a plug-in unit, plug a lamp into the same outlet with the wall switch on — if the lamp lights, power is arriving and the disposal's motor is dead. On a hardwired unit, that test means opening the wiring box, which is where a lot of people should reasonably stop and call an electrician.

A disposal that receives confirmed power and does nothing has a failed motor, and these are not rebuilt — the unit is replaced. A new disposal runs $90 to $380 for the unit and $100 to $300 installed, and it is a very reasonable DIY swap if the connection is a plug and you buy the same brand, because you can usually reuse the existing sink flange. Call an electrician if the unit is hardwired and you are not confident with that connection, or if you find scorching, a burnt smell, or a breaker that trips the moment you switch the disposal on.
