A disposal that hums steadily but will not turn is jammed, not broken. Something has wedged between an impeller and the shredder ring, the motor is stalled, and if you keep pressing the switch you will burn out a working motor for the sake of a chicken bone. Every disposal is built to be freed by hand, and the whole job takes about ten minutes. The one thing worth understanding before you start is what the sound is telling you, because a hum, a silence and a free-spinning motor with water backing up in the sink are three different problems with three different answers.
Read this first
- Never put your hand into the grinding chamber, even with the power off. The shredder ring edges will cut you and there is usually broken glass or a metal fragment in there.
- Switch the disposal off at the wall AND unplug it under the sink, or switch off its breaker, before reaching into the chamber with anything. A unit tripped on thermal overload can restart on its own as it cools.
- Do not pour drain cleaner into a jammed disposal. It will sit in the chamber, will not clear a mechanical jam, and turns the whole job into a chemical hazard.
- A disposal that hums for more than a couple of seconds is drawing stalled-rotor current. Release the switch immediately rather than holding it on and hoping.
Step by step
Identify the sound before you do anything else
Press the switch briefly and listen. A steady hum with no rotation is a mechanical jam, and that is what this guide fixes. Complete silence means the motor is not being energised at all — check the wall switch, the outlet under the sink, the breaker, and the reset button below, and on a batch-feed unit check that the magnetic stopper is seated and turned, since those will not run without it. A motor that spins freely and normally while water backs up in the sink is not jammed at all; that is a drain blockage downstream of the disposal. A harsh rattling or grinding while it still turns means a loose foreign object rather than a wedged one.
Kill the power properly, not just at the wall
The wall switch is not sufficient, because a disposal that tripped its overload while you were working can come back to life the moment it cools. Switch it off at the wall, then look under the sink: most units plug into a switched outlet, so pull the plug. Hardwired units have no plug, so switch off the breaker in the panel and confirm it is dead by trying the wall switch. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that turns a ten-minute job into an injury. Put the bucket and towels underneath while you are down there.
Look into the chamber and remove what you can see
Shine a flashlight straight down through the sink opening, folding the rubber splash guard back or lifting it out entirely — on most models it pulls out, and doing so gives you a far better view. Very often the culprit is visible immediately: a spoon or fork handle standing up between the impellers, a fruit pit, a bottle cap, a shard of bone, or a twist tie wrapped around the flywheel. Reach in with long tongs or needle-nose pliers and lift it out. Never use your hand, and never use the disposal's own power to try to shake something free.
Work the flywheel with the hex wrench from below
Under the centre of the disposal body is a hex socket, and nearly every unit ships with a small 1/4-inch wrench that clips to the mounting bracket or comes taped inside the box. Insert it fully and work it back and forth. You will feel a hard stop in one direction where the obstruction is trapped — do not force through it, rock the flywheel the other way and back, gradually increasing the arc until it breaks free. Keep working until the wrench turns a full circle smoothly in both directions with no catch. That free rotation is the test that the jam is actually gone, not just moved.
Use a broom handle if there is no hex socket
Some models, particularly older and higher-end units, have no bottom socket. With the power confirmed off, put the end of a wooden broom handle or a sturdy wooden spoon handle down into the chamber, brace it against one of the impeller lugs, and lever it round. The impellers are not blades — they are blunt swivelling lugs that fling waste against the stationary shredder ring — so you are levering against a solid metal tab, not something sharp. Work it in both directions as before until the flywheel spins freely. Then look again with the flashlight for whatever came loose and lift it out with the tongs.
Press the reset button and let the motor cool
On the underside of nearly every disposal is a small red or black button, the manual reset for the thermal overload protector that tripped when the motor stalled. If the motor is still hot it may not latch, so give it ten to fifteen minutes and try again — pressing repeatedly at a hot motor achieves nothing. When it latches it stays pushed in with a click. If it pops straight back out every time, or trips again within seconds of restoring power, the jam is not fully cleared or the motor is drawing too much current, and you should go back to the flywheel rather than keep resetting it.
Restore power and test with cold water running
Refit the splash guard, plug the unit back in or restore the breaker, and turn the cold tap on before you hit the switch. Run it for twenty or thirty seconds with a steady flow of cold water. It should spin up immediately with an even note and no rattling. If it hums again, switch off at once and go back to the wrench — something is still in there. Cold water rather than hot matters here: cold keeps fats solid so they get chopped and flushed away, while hot water melts grease that then congeals further down the drain line.
Work out what jammed it and change that habit
A disposal that jams once will jam again on the same food. The usual offenders are hard items it was never meant to take — bones, fruit pits, and cutlery or bottle caps that fell in unnoticed — and fibrous, stringy waste such as celery, corn husks, artichoke leaves and onion skins, which wrap around the flywheel rather than being flung outward. Starchy loads such as pasta, rice and potato peel swell and pack the chamber. Feed waste in gradually with the water already running, rather than filling the chamber and then switching on, and keep the tap running for another twenty seconds after the grinding note goes clear so the debris actually leaves the trap.

When to call a pro
If the flywheel now turns freely by hand and the reset button latches, but the unit stays completely silent when switched on, the motor or the switch has failed. At that point it is worth knowing that disposals are generally replaced rather than repaired — the motor is not a serviceable part and a new unit often costs less than the labour to diagnose an old one. Water leaking from the bottom housing seal is the same story. Bring in a plumber rather than an appliance technician if the sink drains slowly even with the disposal running freely, since that is a blocked trap or branch line, and any electrical work on a hardwired unit where you are not confident switching the circuit off safely.
