A completely dead appliance is far more often a supply or an interlock problem than a broken machine. Work outward in this order: the outlet, the breaker or GFCI, the appliance's own door switch or lid switch, then the control. Every washer, dryer, dishwasher and microwave has at least one safety interlock that silently refuses to let the machine start, and those switches fail far more often than control boards do.
Read this first
- Unplug the appliance, or pull its breaker, before opening any panel or reaching into a disposal chamber. A wall switch is not an isolation point.
- Never put a hand into a garbage disposal, even with the switch off. Use the hex wrench in the socket underneath the unit.
- A microwave's control panel sits beside the high-voltage section, and its capacitor can hold a lethal charge with the plug out. Keypad faults are a technician's job.
- A breaker that trips again immediately is telling you there is a fault. Do not keep resetting it.
What it usually means
Manufacturers put interlocks everywhere because a running appliance with an open door is dangerous. A dryer will not start with the door switch open, a washer will not spin with the lid up, a microwave will not run with any of its three door interlocks unhappy, and a garbage disposal will not run once its thermal overload has tripped. All four present identically: press start, nothing happens, no error.
The second most common cause is the supply itself. Disposals and dishwashers commonly sit on GFCI protection that trips silently; kitchen and laundry circuits are shared more often than people assume; and a hardwired range hood or compactor may be fed from a switch loop that somebody turned off months ago. None of that is visible from the front of the machine, which is why it gets misdiagnosed as a dead control board.
What to check first
Prove the outlet with something else
Plug a lamp or a phone charger into the same socket. This one step separates 'the appliance is dead' from 'the circuit is dead' and it takes ten seconds. For a hardwired appliance, check the breaker instead.
Reset the breaker and any GFCI
Push the breaker fully off, then on. Then look for GFCI outlets on the same circuit — under the sink, in the garage, in a bathroom — and press reset. A tripped GFCI upstream is the classic dead-disposal and dead-dishwasher call.
Press the appliance's own reset
Garbage disposals have a small red overload button on the underside of the body. Some compactors and hoods have one too. If it has popped out, the motor overheated — press it, and then find out what jammed it before you use it again.
Test the door or lid switch
Open and close the door firmly and listen for a distinct click. On a dryer, press the switch plunger by hand with the door open. No click, or a plunger that no longer reaches, means the switch or the strike is the fault — a cheap part that stops the entire machine.
Look for a control lock or a demo mode
Most modern panels have a child lock, usually a padlock icon held for three seconds, and many have a showroom or demo mode that lights the display but disables the machine. A power cut can drop an appliance into either one.
Check the run capacitor on a hood or compactor motor
A motor that hums but will not turn, or that needs a nudge to start, usually has a failed run capacitor. It is an inexpensive part, but it stores charge — leave it to a technician unless you know how to discharge one safely.

This is about who is allowed to do the work, not how hard it is. The bottom row is not a difficulty rating — it is the legal and safety line, and it does not move for confidence or experience.
