Dishwasher Leaking — Find the Source Before It Damages the Floor

Dishwasher leaks come in two flavours, and telling them apart saves you an hour. Water appearing at the front along the door line is a door, gasket, or suds problem. Water appearing from underneath is a hose, valve, or pump seal problem. Lay paper towels in both places, run a cycle, and let the machine tell you which half of this guide you need.

Step by step

  1. Localise the leak with paper towels

    Dry the floor completely, then lay folded paper towels tight against the base along the front and, if you can reach, along the sides and rear after pulling the kick plate. Run a normal cycle and check at fill, mid-wash, and drain. Note which towel wets and at what point. A leak only during fill points at the inlet valve or supply line; a leak throughout wash points at the door or the tub; a leak only during drain points at the drain hose or its connection.

  2. Check the detergent — this is a real cause, not a throwaway line

    Putting hand dish soap, or far too much dishwasher detergent, into a dishwasher generates a tub full of foam that walks straight out under the door. If you find suds on the floor rather than clear water, this is your answer. Cancel the cycle, scoop out the foam, sprinkle a little salt or pour a small amount of cooking oil in to break it down, and run rinse cycles until it is gone. Then use only detergent labelled for automatic dishwashers, at the dose on the pack.

  3. Inspect the door gasket and the door alignment

    Run your fingers around the full perimeter seal looking for hardened, torn, flattened or displaced sections, and for food debris holding it open. Clean it with warm soapy water. Then close the door on a strip of paper at several points and pull — you should feel consistent drag everywhere. Uneven resistance usually means a broken door spring or a stretched hinge cable letting the door sit slightly proud at one corner.

  4. Check the float and float switch

    The float is a small plastic dome in the front corner of the tub floor that rises with the water and tells the machine to stop filling. Lift it and let it drop a few times — it must move freely up and down. Debris or a warped guide can hold it down, in which case the dishwasher keeps filling until it overflows. Underneath the machine, the float switch itself can be tested for continuity as the float is raised.

  5. Check the water inlet valve and supply line

    With the power off, pull the kick plate and look at the inlet valve at the front left or right of the base. Look for mineral crust, drips at the compression fitting, or a wet valve body. A valve that fails to close fully keeps filling the tub even between cycles, which is the classic cause of a dishwasher that leaks while nobody is using it. Snug the supply fitting a quarter turn; if the body itself is wet, replace the valve.

  6. Check hose clamps and the drain connection

    Follow the fill line, the circulation hoses and the drain hose under the machine and squeeze each clamp point with a dry paper towel to find damp spots. Corrugated hoses split at the folds and clamps loosen with heat cycling. Check the drain hose where it lands at the disposal or air gap too — that connection is under pressure during drain and is a frequent leak source.

  7. Level the machine and check the pump seal

    Put a level across the tub floor front to back and side to side and adjust the leveling legs. A dishwasher tilted forward pushes water against the door seal it was never designed to hold. Finally, look directly beneath the motor and pump assembly: a steady drip centred there means the pump shaft seal has failed, which lets water past the seal and eventually into the motor.

When to call a pro

A failed pump shaft seal on an integrated motor-pump assembly usually means replacing the whole unit — $150–$400 installed, and worth weighing against a new machine. A cracked or corroded tub is not repairable. If you find soft or discoloured subfloor, cupped flooring, or damp cabinet sides, deal with the water damage separately and promptly; the repair to the dishwasher does not undo it. Any hardwired electrical work under the machine should be done with the circuit confirmed dead.
