Before you assume something is broken, know how your machine dries. Older dishwashers use an exposed heating element to bake the moisture off. Most machines sold in the last decade dry by condensation — they heat the final rinse, then let the moisture condense on the cooler stainless tub wall. Condensation drying is quieter and far more efficient, but it depends completely on rinse aid and on how you load, and it will never fully dry plastic. Half of all not-drying complaints are a machine working exactly as designed.

Step by step
Fill the rinse aid dispenser
On a condensation-drying dishwasher, rinse aid is not optional — it is a functional component. It breaks the surface tension so water sheets off rather than beading, and without it dishes come out spotted and wet no matter what else you do. Fill the dispenser, and if your machine has an adjustable rinse aid setting, turn it up a notch. Refill roughly monthly. This one step fixes more not-drying complaints than every other step combined.
Turn on heated dry or the extra dry option
Check that heated dry, extra dry, sanitise, or whatever your model calls it has not been switched off — eco and quick cycles frequently disable it by default and the setting persists between loads. On many machines a longer, hotter cycle also raises the final rinse temperature, which is what makes condensation drying work in the first place.
Check the incoming water temperature
Run the kitchen tap hot until it stops getting hotter, catch some in a cup, and measure it. You want at least 120°F. If it is cooler, turn up the water heater thermostat a little, or run the tap hot immediately before starting the dishwasher so the first fill is not a slug of cold water sitting in the pipe. Cold fills sabotage both washing and drying.
Fix how you load
Water that has nowhere to run off will still be there at the end. Angle bowls, cups and anything concave so they drain rather than forming a pool. Keep items from nesting or touching, because two surfaces pressed together stay wet between them. And leave a little space — an overpacked machine blocks the hot air and the tub wall that the condensation process needs.
Accept what plastic does, or change what you buy
Plastic has very low thermal mass, so it does not hold enough heat at the end of the cycle to evaporate the film on its surface, while glass and ceramic come out bone dry. This is physics, not a fault. Put plastics on the top rack, hand-dry them, or pull them out and shake them before you unload anything else.
Crack the door and unload bottom-up
When the cycle ends, open the door a couple of inches and leave it for fifteen to twenty minutes — the trapped moisture escapes as steam instead of recondensing onto the dishes. Then unload the bottom rack first. Unloading the top first tips the water pooled in upturned cup bases straight onto the dry dishes below, which is why people think their bottom rack is not drying.
Test the heating element
If your machine has an exposed element in the tub floor and you are getting no heat at all — cool dishes, no steam when you open the door mid-cycle — turn off the breaker and test the element for continuity at its terminals under the machine. A healthy element usually reads somewhere in the 10–30 ohm range; an open reading means it has failed. Also look for visible blistering, pitting, or a break in the sheath.
Check the vent and fan assembly
Most dishwashers have a vent in the door or upper tub, sometimes with a small fan, that releases humid air late in the cycle. Check that the vent flap moves freely and is not glued shut with detergent residue, and that the fan spins if your model has one. A blocked vent traps the moisture inside where it drips straight back onto the load.

When to call a pro
If the element tests open, the replacement is a moderate job that usually means pulling the machine out and dropping the base — reasonable for a confident DIYer, but a legitimate service call otherwise. If the element tests good but never energises, the control board is not commanding it, and that is a board diagnosis rather than a guess. Any hardwired connection work under the machine should be done with the circuit verified dead.
