Dishwasher Door Won't Latch or Stay Closed

A dishwasher door has two separate jobs, and they fail independently. The latch holds the door shut against the tub seal and tells the control it is safe to start. The hinge cables and springs carry the door's weight so it opens smoothly and stays where you put it. A door that will not catch is a latch or strike problem; a door that crashes open or will not stay horizontal is a spring problem. Work out which one you have first.

Step by step

  1. Check the machine is still secured to the counter

    Open the door fully and look at the top edge of the tub for two mounting brackets screwed up into the underside of the countertop, or side brackets screwed into the cabinets. If those screws have pulled out — common in laminate counters — the whole machine tilts forward when the door opens, which throws the door out of alignment with the strike and makes it seem like the latch failed. Refit those screws before anything else.

  2. Look for what is blocking the door

    Close the door slowly and watch where it first meets resistance. Tall items on the upper rack, a cutlery basket that has slid forward, a plate lip protruding past the rack rails, or a rack that has come off its rails all keep the door a few millimetres from home — and a few millimetres is enough that the latch never engages. Also check the door gasket has not rolled out of its channel at the top corners.

  3. Check and adjust the strike

    The strike is the metal or plastic tongue on the tub frame that the latch grabs, and on most machines it is mounted in a slotted hole so it can be moved. Look for wear, bending, or a strike that has drifted. Loosen its screws, close the door and hold it firmly against the seal, then nudge the strike into alignment and retighten. A quarter of these repairs are nothing more than moving the strike a couple of millimetres.

  4. Inspect the latch mechanism itself

    With the door open, look into the latch housing on the door with a flashlight and work the handle. The moving jaws should snap crisply and return under spring pressure. Detergent residue, a broken return spring, or a cracked plastic body will leave the latch sitting half-open so the strike bounces off it. Clean it with hot water and a brush first; latch assemblies run $20 to $80 and are usually a few screws behind the inner door panel.

  5. Test the door switch inside the latch

    The control does not watch the latch — it watches a microswitch inside the latch assembly. If the door mechanically latches but the machine still refuses to start, that switch is the fault. With the breaker off, open the inner door panel, find the switch, and test it for continuity as the latch is operated. A machine that starts and then stops the instant someone leans on the door usually has a switch that is only just making contact.

  6. Inspect the hinge cables and springs

    A door that slams open, feels heavy, or will not stay level has lost a spring or a cable. Pull the lower access panel and look at both sides: each hinge has a spring anchored to the frame and a cable or strap running over a pulley to the door. Look for a snapped cable, a cable jumped off its pulley, or a spring that has stretched. Always replace springs and cables in pairs — one strong side and one weak side twists the door and ruins the seal.

  7. Level the machine and retest

    Put a bubble level across the tub floor front to back and side to side and adjust the leveling legs. A machine tilted forward puts the door's weight against the latch continuously and pushes water at a seal never designed to hold it. Once level and latching, close the door on a strip of paper at four points around the perimeter and pull — you want consistent drag everywhere, which tells you the door is meeting the seal squarely.

When to call a pro

If the latch, strike, springs and cables are all sound and the door still will not hold, the door itself may be twisted or the tub frame distorted — usually from someone standing or sitting on an open door — and that is not something a parts swap corrects. Bring in a technician if the machine is integrated behind a custom cabinet panel whose weight has been mismatched to the spring tension, since those need the spring rating adjusting rather than replacing. Any hardwired electrical work should be done with the circuit confirmed dead.
