Finding an intact detergent pod sitting in the bottom of the tub, or a cup of powder still full at the end of a cycle, is one of the most common dishwasher complaints and one of the most misdiagnosed. Roughly half the time nothing is broken at all — a tall item on the lower rack is physically blocking the flap. The rest is either hardened residue gluing the latch shut or a failed wax motor, and both are cheap.
Read this first
- Switch the dishwasher off at the breaker before opening the inner door panel or testing the wax motor.
- The inner door panel has sharp folded edges and insulation behind it — wear gloves and support the panel as you free it.
- Never force the dispenser flap open by hand while a cycle is running; you will break the latch and the door will not close again.
Step by step
Check what is blocking the door
Open the dishwasher, close the dispenser flap, and look at exactly what sits in front of it when the door is shut. A baking sheet, a chopping board, a tall pot handle or an oversized plate on the front of the lower rack will physically stop the flap from swinging open. This is the number one cause and it costs nothing to fix — leave the front-centre position of the lower rack clear and reload.
Work out whether it failed to open or failed to dissolve
These look identical and are not the same problem. A pod sitting on the tub floor, intact and dry, means the flap never opened. A pod stuck inside the dispenser cup as a gummy residue, or a cup half full of caked powder, means the flap opened but the detergent never washed out — that points at water temperature, a blocked spray arm, or detergent that has absorbed moisture in storage. Look carefully before you diagnose.
Clean the dispenser cup and the latch track
Detergent residue builds into a hard crust along the edge of the flap and in the latch slot, and it glues the door shut just firmly enough that the wax motor cannot release it. Scrub the cup, the flap edges, the seal and the latch slot with an old toothbrush and hot water or white vinegar. Dry it, then open and close the flap ten times by hand to confirm it now moves freely and latches with a clean click.
Check the latch spring and the slide
Behind the flap there is a small spring that snaps it open once the latch releases. If that spring has come off its post, rusted, or lost tension, the flap unlatches on cue and then just sits there — which looks exactly like a dispenser that never opened. Watch the flap as you release the latch by hand: it should fly open smartly, not creep. Spring kits are inexpensive on many models, though some brands only sell the complete dispenser.
Confirm the water is hot enough
Detergent, especially in pod form, needs heat to dissolve. Run the kitchen tap until it stops getting hotter, catch some in a cup and measure it — you want at least 120°F. If it is cooler, turn the water heater up a little or run the tap hot immediately before starting the machine so the first fill is not a slug of cold water from the pipe. Cold fills leave undissolved detergent in the cup and dirty dishes on every rack.
Test the wax motor
Most dispensers are released by a wax motor — a small cylinder that warms up, expands a plunger, and trips the latch. They fail open-circuit and they are the usual electrical cause. With the breaker off, open the inner door panel, unplug the wax motor and measure its resistance; most read somewhere in the 1,000 to 3,000 ohm range and an open reading condemns it. Many manufacturers only sell the complete dispenser assembly rather than the motor alone.
Use the workaround while you wait for the part
If the flap will not open and the part is on order, you are not stuck. Put a measured dose of powder or gel loose in the pre-wash cup, or drop a pod straight into the bottom of the tub before you start the cycle — it dissolves in the main wash and cleans acceptably, though slightly less effectively than a timed release. Do not tape the dispenser flap open, because detergent released during the pre-rinse fill is simply pumped out.

When to call a pro
If the wax motor tests open, replacement is a moderate job on most machines — the inner door panel comes off and the assembly is held by a few screws and a wiring plug — but it is a fair service call if you are not comfortable dismantling a door with the insulation and wiring inside it. If the wax motor tests good and never gets a signal, the control board is not commanding it, and that is a board diagnosis worth paying for rather than guessing at. Any hardwired electrical work under the machine should be done with the circuit confirmed dead.
