A leaking appliance almost never leaks from where you find the water. The puddle is the end of the trail, not the start of it. Kill the power at the breaker before you kneel in it, shut the appliance's own water supply valve, then work backwards from the puddle: a blocked drain, a failed inlet valve, a split hose, or a door seal that has stopped sealing accounts for the large majority of leaks across every water-carrying appliance in the house.
Read this first
- Water and electricity: kill the breaker before you touch a wet appliance or the floor around it. The wall switch is not enough.
- If the wet-looking film near a refrigerator's copper lines is oily rather than clean water, that is refrigerant. Do not tighten anything — sealed-system work is EPA Section 608 certified only.
- Do not run a leaking appliance 'one more cycle to see'. Every cycle puts more water into the cabinet base and the subfloor.
What it usually means
Water gets into an appliance through one supply line and is supposed to leave through one drain. A leak means something in between has either lost its seal or lost its route out. That is why the diagnosis is nearly always the same shape regardless of the machine: confirm the supply side is dry, confirm the drain path is clear, then look at every gasket, boot and clamp between the two. Frost-free refrigerators add a third path — the defrost drain — and it is the single most common leak in the house.
The cost of getting this wrong is not the repair, it is the floor. Water under a kick plate wicks into laminate, particleboard cabinet bases and subfloor, and the damage is usually irreversible within a few days rather than weeks. Even a slow drip is worth stopping the same day, which is why a leak is one of the few faults where an after-hours call can genuinely be cheaper than waiting.
What to check first
Cut the power at the breaker, not the switch
Standing water and a live appliance is the one combination on this page that can kill you. Throw the breaker for that circuit before you mop, move the machine, or reach behind it. If the water has reached an outlet or an extension lead, leave it and shut the whole panel down.
Shut the appliance's supply valve
Dishwashers and refrigerators have a stop under the sink or behind the cabinet; washers have hot and cold stops at the wall box. Close it. If you cannot find or turn it, close the main house shutoff. This alone converts a spreading emergency into a repair you can schedule.
Dry everything and mark the candidates
Wipe the floor completely dry, then lay a folded paper towel at each suspect: under the supply fitting, under the drain connection, under the door, and under the pump or drain pan. Run the machine for one short cycle. Whichever towel wets first is your leak, and you have just saved an hour of guessing.
Read where the water shows up
On a refrigerator, water under the crisper drawers or a sheet of ice on the freezer floor is a blocked defrost drain; water behind the cabinet is the supply line or the drain pan. On a front-load washer, water at the door means the boot; water at the back means a hose or the pump. On a dishwasher, water at the front-left almost always means the door gasket or the float.
Check the fittings you touched most recently
A leak that starts the week a water filter was changed, a machine was moved, or a hose was replaced is that job, not a coincidence. Rolled O-rings on aftermarket filter cartridges and hoses kinked during a move are two of the most common causes of a leak with no other explanation.
Look for oily residue rather than water
On a fridge, freezer or wine cooler, a wet-looking film with an oily sheen near a weld or a copper line is not water — it is refrigerant oil, and it means the sealed system is leaking. Stop. That is EPA Section 608 work and no amount of tightening will help.
DIY, technician, or licensed trade?
This is about who is allowed to do the work, not how hard it is. The bottom row is not a difficulty rating — it is the legal and safety line, and it does not move for confidence or experience.

- Anything that requires pulling the tub or dropping the sump
- Any leak from a sealed refrigerant circuit — locating, recovering and recharging requires EPA Section 608 certification
- Re-plumbing a supply line into the wall, or any work on the house drain past the trap, where local plumbing code applies
