An ice maker that leaks is overfilling, and overfilling has three causes: it is receiving water for too long, the water is not landing where it should, or the appliance is not sitting level so the mould overflows on one side. All three produce the same picture — a lumpy slab of ice welded to the bottom of the bin, water tracking down the freezer wall, and eventually a puddle on the kitchen floor.

- Unplug the refrigerator or ice machine before removing the ice maker or testing the inlet valve.
- Thaw a frozen fill tube with a hair dryer on low only. A heat gun melts the plastic tube and the mould, and boiling water cracks cold plastic.
- Shut the household supply valve before touching any water fitting.
- Water that has been quietly leaking into a freezer floor becomes a sheet of ice that lifts the liner. Deal with it promptly rather than chipping at it later.
Step by step
Measure what the machine actually takes on a fill
Empty the mould, put a measuring cup under the fill tube where it enters the ice maker, and force a fill using your model's test cycle. Most household ice makers take four to six ounces per fill. Noticeably more than that means the valve is staying open too long or not closing at all, and the surplus runs straight out of the mould. This one measurement separates a valve fault from everything else.
Look for a frozen fill tube and a misaligned fill cup
Pull the ice bin out and look at the small plastic tube that delivers water into the back of the mould, and at the funnel or cup it discharges into. If there is ice in the tube, water backs up and sprays outside the mould. If the tube has slipped off its clip or the cup has been knocked out of alignment — extremely common after someone has forced a stuck bin out — water lands beside the mould rather than in it. Thaw ice with a hair dryer on low and reseat the tube.
Level the appliance
Put a bubble level on top of the cabinet and check side to side and front to back. A refrigerator should be level across and tilted very slightly back. If it leans forward or to one side, the mould fills unevenly and the low corner overflows on every single cycle — which produces a leak that looks mysterious because everything tests fine. Adjust the front leveling legs and give it a day.
Test the inlet valve for a slow weep
A valve that no longer closes fully lets water trickle through continuously between cycles, which is the classic cause of a mould overflowing and an ice slab that reforms as fast as you break it. Shut the household supply valve for a few hours: if the leak stops entirely, the valve is not sealing. With the appliance unplugged, you can also measure each solenoid coil — most read in the 200 to 500 ohm range — but a weeping valve usually tests electrically fine and still needs replacing.
Check the supply line and the filter head
Pull the appliance out and follow the water line from the wall to the inlet valve, looking for mineral crust, a damp compression fitting, or a hairline split where the tubing was kinked. Then check the filter housing — filter heads are a very common slow-leak source, especially in the week after a cartridge change. Confirm the O-rings are present and not rolled, and that the cartridge is a proper match for the model rather than a near-fit aftermarket.
Inspect the mould, the heater and the ejector
A hairline crack in the plastic mould, or a harvest heater that runs longer than it should, will both put water where it does not belong. Look at the mould with a flashlight for a split, and watch a harvest cycle: the ejector arms should sweep the cubes out cleanly once the mould surface has released them. A harvest that starts before the water has fully frozen throws slush into the bin, which then melts and looks exactly like a leak.
Clear the ice out and watch a full day
Chip nothing — thaw. Empty the bin, remove any ice slab by turning the freezer off and letting it melt with towels down, and dry the compartment completely. Then run the machine for 24 hours and inspect. This matters because several of the causes above look identical once ice has built up, and only a clean start tells you whether the change you made actually fixed it.

If the valve is new, the tube is clear, the appliance is level and it still overfills, the ice maker module's fill timing has failed and the assembly needs replacing — a $90 to $280 part and a moderate DIY job on most designs, but a fair service call otherwise. Bring in a technician if water is appearing inside the cabinet walls or the liner has lifted, since that indicates the leak has been running long enough to soak the insulation. Sealed-system work of any kind requires EPA Section 608 certification.
