The first decision when a freezer fails is about the food, not the appliance. The USDA figure is roughly 48 hours for a full freezer left closed, and about 24 for a half-full one; a well-packed chest unit tends to do better than an upright. That window is usually enough to get a technician out, but it closes fast every time the lid is lifted — so keep it shut and make the call.

12–16 years, and chest freezers regularly exceed that. They have the fewest moving parts of any appliance in the house — no fan, no defrost system, no icemaker.

Garage and basement installations are the usual reason a freezer fails early. Most thermostats are rated for ambient temperatures above about 55°F, and below that the compressor under-cycles and the contents thaw. A garage-rated model is a genuinely different machine.
