Washing machines fail in two distinct ways depending on their design. Top-loaders lose lid switches, motor couplers and transmissions; front-loaders lose door boot seals, drain pumps and bearings. Knowing which you have narrows the likely fault before anyone opens a panel.

The most expensive washer repair is the one nobody mentions on the phone: rear tub bearings on a front-loader. The symptom is a jet-engine roar on spin, and the job is usually a full teardown. On most mid-market machines it costs more than the machine is worth, which is exactly the conversation to have before paying a second diagnostic fee.

How long a washer lasts

10–13 years. Top-loaders with a mechanical transmission often outlast that; high-speed front-loaders trend lower because their bearings and boot seals carry more work per cycle.

Chronic overloading is the usual cause of a machine dying at year six. It loads the bearings, wears the suspension and leaves detergent that never rinses clear. Machines installed on a springy upper-floor deck without a solid base fail early for the same reason.

When replacing beats repairing

  • The quote is for tub bearings or a transmission on a machine past year eight.
  • The repair is over half the price of a comparable new machine.
  • The drum has cracked, or the outer tub is welded shut and the failed part is inside it.
  • It is the third repair in two years — the remaining components are all the same age.

Why won't my washer drain?
In order of likelihood: a blocked pump filter, a kinked or clogged drain hose, a broken lid switch on a top-loader that stops the drain cycle, then a failed drain pump. The filter and hose are both homeowner checks that cost nothing and resolve a large share of these calls.
Is a front-loader or top-loader cheaper to repair?
Top-loaders. Their common failures — lid switch, belt, motor coupler — are $130–$300 jobs. Front-loaders share the cheap failures but add the two expensive ones, door boot seals at $200–$400 and rear tub bearings at $400–$700.
How long do washing machines last?

Why does my washer smell even though I clean it?
The odour lives in the door boot fold and the detergent drawer, not the drum. Wipe the boot dry after each wash, leave the door ajar, use the correct dose of HE detergent, and run a monthly hot maintenance wash. Cold washes with excess detergent are what feed the biofilm.
My washer shakes violently on spin — is it dangerous?
It will damage itself, and on an upper floor it can damage the structure. Check first that all four feet are down and locked and that any transit bolts were removed at installation. If it is level and still walking, the suspension rods or shock absorbers are worn and are replaced as a set.
Should I repair a washing machine that is 8 years old?
For anything under about $250, usually yes — you are buying two to five more years. For bearings or a transmission at that age, no: the quote will approach half the price of a new machine and the remaining components are all equally worn.
