Doors fail three ways and each has a different answer. A door that will not open is usually an interlock doing its job — a front-load washer holds the lock until the tub is drained, and a self-clean oven holds it until the cavity drops below roughly 500°F. A door that will not latch is nearly always alignment rather than the latch. A door that closes but no longer seals is a gasket, a hinge, or a cabinet that is not level.

- Never force a self-clean oven door. The cavity has been near 900°F and the lock releases on temperature — forcing it breaks the latch and can expose you to the heat still inside.

What it usually means
Interlocks are the most misread fault in the house. A front-load washer will not release its door with water in the tub, by design — drain it through the pump filter and the lock usually opens on its own. A self-clean oven locks at the start of a pyrolytic cycle that runs near 900°F and will not release until the cavity has cooled, which can take two to three hours after the cycle ends. In both cases forcing the door breaks a part that was working correctly.
Sealing failures are quieter and cost more over time. A refrigerator or freezer gasket that no longer grips means the compressor runs almost continuously, frost builds on the evaporator, and the cabinet ages years in months. An oven door that has lost hinge tension bleeds heat and will never hold a set temperature. Neither shows as a fault code, which is why both go unnoticed until the energy bill or the cooking results give it away.
What to check first
Drain a front-load washer before touching the door
Open the pump filter flap at the bottom front, put a shallow tray and towels down, and drain the tub. The lock is holding because there is water behind the glass. Most machines release within a minute or two of the drain completing and a power cycle.
Wait out a self-clean oven
The lock releases on temperature, not on time, and a cavity that reached 880°F takes hours to fall below the release threshold. Do not force the latch and do not pull the breaker mid-cycle — on many models that leaves the motorised latch stranded in the locked position.
Power cycle before you disassemble
Kill the breaker for two full minutes and restore it. A stuck lock motor on a washer, dishwasher or oven frequently completes its travel on the next power-up, and it costs nothing to try.
Do the dollar bill test on every seal
Close the door on a banknote and pull. It should drag. Work round all four sides of every door — a gasket usually fails at one corner or along the hinge side first, and that is enough to cause constant running and frost.
Level the cabinet and check hinge tension
A refrigerator should sit level side to side and tilted very slightly back so doors self-close. An oven or dishwasher door should hold at any angle; one that falls open or slams shut has lost a hinge spring, which also stops it sealing at the top.
Break a chest freezer vacuum with air, not force
A lid that will not lift after being opened and closed is a pressure difference, not a jam — warm air went in, cooled, and contracted. Wait ten minutes, or run a plastic card round the gasket to break the seal. Never lever it with a screwdriver.
