An oven door that no longer closes flush is not a cosmetic problem. The door is part of the oven's insulation, and a gap of even a few millimetres at one corner lets enough heat escape to throw the thermostat off, brown one side of a tray and not the other, and drive up the energy the range uses on every bake. Almost all of it comes down to three parts: the hinges, their springs, and the braided rope gasket.

- Let the oven cool completely and switch it off at the breaker before removing the door.
- Oven door hinges are under heavy spring tension. Lock each hinge with its locking pin — or a stout paperclip through the hole provided — before the door comes off, or the arm will snap shut on your fingers.
- An oven door is heavier than it looks and the glass panels can shift inside the frame. Lift it with two people where you can.
- Never leave an oven running with the door propped open to heat a room. It is a carbon monoxide hazard on gas and a burn hazard on any oven.
Step by step
Check nothing inside is fouling the door
Start with the free check. A rack pushed forward, a baking stone left standing on edge, a probe cable trapped in the opening, or a tray overhanging the front will all hold a door proud. Pull everything out, close the door and look along the seam from the side at eye level. If it now closes flush, you have your answer and nothing needs replacing.
Read the gap before you dismantle anything
Close the door and look at the gap between the door and the front frame at all four corners. A gap that is even at the top and tight at the bottom points at the hinges. A gap at one side only points at one hinge or one spring. A door that closes flush at the edges but you can feel heat escaping in the middle points at a flattened gasket rather than a hinge. Photograph it — it is useful for comparison after the repair.
Remove the door with the hinges locked
Open the door to its service position — usually fully open or to the first stop, depending on the model — and look at each hinge arm where it enters the frame. There is a hole for a locking pin, and most ranges ship with two small pins for exactly this. Insert them, or use a stout paperclip. Then close the door partway, lift it straight up and out. Skipping this step is how people get hurt on this job.
Inspect the hinge arms
With the door on a padded surface, look at each hinge. You are checking for a bent arm, a worn or elongated pivot hole, a broken roller, and any sign the hinge has been overextended by someone leaning on an open door. Work each hinge through its travel by hand with the pin removed and compare the two — a hinge that moves noticeably more easily than its partner has lost spring tension and the pair should be replaced together.
Check the springs and the receiver slots
On many ranges the hinge springs live in the range body rather than the door, reached by pulling the side panel or the storage drawer. Look for a stretched, detached or broken spring, and check the receiver slots the hinge arms drop into for wear and distortion. A door that slams the last few inches has strong springs and a worn receiver; a door that will not stay open has lost tension. Replace springs in pairs.
Inspect and replace the door gasket
The oven gasket is a braided rope seal, usually clipped into holes around the door or the frame with small metal tabs, and sometimes glued at the ends. Run your hand around it looking for flattened, hardened, frayed or missing sections, particularly at the bottom corners where spills collect. Pull the old one out, clean the channel, and press the new one in tab by tab, working from one corner around. Do not stretch it to make it reach — order the right length.
Check the inner door panel and glass
Look at the door edge on. The inner glass sits in brackets and can shift if the door has been dropped or the screws have loosened, which bows the door so it touches at the middle and gaps at the corners. Check the screws around the inner panel are snug but not overtightened, and confirm the glass is seated in its retaining clips. Cracked or shattered oven glass is a replacement, not a repair, and the door should not be used until it is fixed.
Refit and verify
Slide the hinge arms fully into their slots, open the door fully, remove the locking pins, and cycle the door several times. It should close flush at all four corners, hold itself shut, and stay put at the half-open position rather than falling. Close it on a strip of paper at six points and pull — consistent drag all round confirms the gasket is meeting the frame. Run a bake at 350°F and feel for escaping heat with the back of your hand a few inches from the seam.

When to call a pro
If the hinges and springs are new, the gasket is fresh and the door still sits crooked, the door frame or the range front is distorted — usually the legacy of someone standing on an open door — and that is beyond a parts swap. Call a technician if you are working on a wall oven, because those doors are heavier, the hinges are often captive in the cabinet, and removing one single-handed at chest height is genuinely awkward. On gas ranges, if a door problem is accompanied by a persistently yellow burner flame or soot, stop using the appliance and have it inspected.
