An oven control panel that has gone dead, or that responds to some keys and not others, is not automatically a control board. Three cheaper things produce the same symptom: a lockout mode that disables the panel by design, a membrane keypad with a key that has stopped releasing, and a ribbon cable that has worked loose from its socket. Boards are the most expensive part on most ranges and they are rarely returnable once fitted, so test in order and buy last.
Read this first
- Switch the range off at the breaker and verify the circuit is dead before removing the control panel. An electric range carries 240 volts and the board is live whenever the appliance is powered.
- Let the oven cool completely. The panel sits directly above the cavity and the surrounding metal stays hot long after the display goes out.
- If the panel died during or shortly after a self-clean cycle, expect heat damage and check the thermal fuse as well — treat the whole area as suspect rather than replacing one part.
- Never bypass a door latch switch to make an oven accept a command. The lock circuit is a safety interlock.
- Any scorching or burnt smell behind the panel means an electrician or technician, not a parts swap.
Step by step
Note precisely which keys fail
Press every key in turn and write down what happens. All keys dead with a lit display, all keys dead with a blank display, and one or two specific keys dead are three different diagnoses. A single dead key or a small cluster of adjacent keys almost always means the membrane keypad, because each key is a printed contact on a flexible sheet and they fail individually. Everything dead at once points further upstream, at the ribbon, the board, or the supply.
Rule out the lockout modes
Ranges have several modes that disable the panel deliberately and look exactly like a failure. Check for a control lock — often a padlock icon activated by holding a key for a few seconds. Check for sabbath mode, which suppresses the display and the tones and is entered accidentally more often than anyone expects. Check for a self-clean lockout still in force, and for a demo or showroom mode. Your model documentation lists the key sequences; work through all of them before opening anything.
Power cycle at the breaker
Switch the range off at the breaker for five minutes — a genuine interruption, not a few seconds — and switch it back on. Control boards hang, particularly after a power cut or a brownout, and this is the documented reset on most brands. If the panel comes back, note it and watch for a repeat. If the display was blank and stays blank, check whether both legs of the 240-volt supply are present, since losing one leg can leave the cooktop working while the oven controls do nothing.
Look for a stuck key on the membrane
This is the classic and it produces a specific behaviour: the panel becomes unresponsive or the display shows a fault code, because the board reads one input as permanently pressed and stops accepting anything else. Look across the keypad at a low angle for a key that sits lower than its neighbours, a bubble or ripple in the membrane, or an area that has swollen from heat. Press each key and feel for one that does not spring back. A stuck key means the keypad, not the board.
Check the ribbon cable behind the panel
With the breaker off and verified dead, take the control panel off — on most ranges a few screws along the top or behind the rear panel. Photograph everything before disconnecting it. Find the flat ribbon cable running from the keypad to the board, release its retainer, and inspect the contacts for corrosion, a crease, or a cracked trace. Reseat it fully and square. A ribbon that has crept out of its socket with years of heat cycling is a free fix and is genuinely common.
Consider whether a self-clean cycle caused this
If the panel failed during or shortly after a self-clean, that is a recognised pattern rather than a coincidence: the cycle runs the cavity far hotter than normal cooking, and the components immediately above it take the brunt. Check the oven's thermal fuse for continuity at the same time, because it commonly opens in the same event and leaves you with an oven that will not heat even after the panel is fixed. Expect to find heat damage rather than a single failed component.
Check the door latch and its switch
On many ranges the board will refuse commands if it believes the door is locked or if the latch switch is reporting an impossible state. Check the latch moves freely and sits fully home, and test its switch for continuity through its travel. A latch motor that has stalled part way, which is a recognised outcome of a self-clean cycle, leaves the control locked out and looking dead. This is a cheap part and worth eliminating before a board.
Inspect the board itself before ordering one
With the panel off, look at the board under good light. You are looking for a bulged or leaking capacitor, a browned or cracked relay, a burnt track, or a small glass or blade fuse on the board that has blown — some boards carry one and it is replaceable. Photograph the part number. Then check availability and price for your model before committing, because on an older range a board can be discontinued, and where it is available it is frequently the single largest reason a range gets replaced rather than repaired.

When to call a pro
Call a technician when the lockouts are ruled out, the ribbon is properly seated, the keypad has no stuck key and the panel is still dead, since at that point you are buying a control board and it is worth having the diagnosis confirmed by measurement rather than by substitution. Call an electrician if you find scorching behind the panel, or if the range has lost one leg of its supply. And on a range where the board is discontinued, get a repair-or-replace conversation on the table early — that is a decision worth making before parts money is spent, not after.
