Microwave Sparking Inside — Stop and Fix It Before Using It Again

Sparks or a blue-white flash inside a running microwave — arcing — comes down to one of three things: metal in the cavity, a damaged waveguide cover, or bare metal showing through the cavity's coating. All three are cheap to fix, and two of them you can do in fifteen minutes. What matters is that you stop using the microwave until you have found which one it is, because arcing burns through the magnetron in short order and each event makes the damage worse.

Read this first

  • Stop the microwave immediately and unplug it the moment you see arcing. Continuing to run it will destroy the magnetron and can start a fire.
  • Never run a microwave with a burnt, holed, or missing waveguide cover — that cover shields the waveguide opening from food splatter.
  • Do not open the microwave's outer cabinet; the high-voltage capacitor holds a dangerous charge even unplugged.
  • Only use paint specifically sold as microwave cavity paint. Ordinary enamel or spray paint in a microwave cavity is a fire hazard.

Step by step

  1. Stop and unplug immediately

    Cancel the cycle, open the door, and unplug the unit. Do not run it again to see if it does it a second time. Every arc event is a concentrated point of heat inside the cavity and the failure escalates quickly — a small burn mark on a waveguide cover becomes a hole, and then the arcing moves to the waveguide itself, which is not a cheap repair.

  2. Remove every piece of metal

    Start with the obvious. Gold or silver trim on a plate, a twist tie, aluminium foil, a takeout container with a metal rim, a fork left in the bowl, a thermometer, a metal-handled utensil, or a mug with a hidden metallic glaze will all arc. Recycled paper towels and some brown paper bags contain metal fragments and are known offenders too. If the arcing only ever happens with one particular dish, that dish is the answer.

  3. Inspect the waveguide cover

    Look at the right-hand interior wall (occasionally the roof) for a thin rectangular panel that looks like cardboard or mica, usually held by a tab or a single screw. This is the waveguide cover, and it is the single most common cause of microwave arcing. Grease and food splatter soak into it, carbonise, and then arc. Any burnt spot, dark stain, blistering, or hole means replace it — the part is $6 to $25 and it takes two minutes.

  4. Cut a replacement cover if you cannot find the exact part

    Universal mica sheet is sold specifically for this and is easy to work with. Take the old cover out, lay it on the new sheet as a template, trace it, and cut it with scissors, transferring any mounting holes with a hole punch. Fit it the same way round. Do not substitute cardboard, foil-backed board, or anything else — mica is used because it is transparent to microwaves and will not char.

  5. Clean the cavity thoroughly

    Baked-on food, especially anything greasy or high in sugar, will arc on its own. Heat a bowl of water with lemon in the microwave for a few minutes to steam the interior loose, then wipe every surface including the roof and the corners. Pay attention to the area around the waveguide cover and around the turntable coupler, which is where splatter accumulates unnoticed.

  6. Check the cavity walls for chipped paint or rust

    Shine a flashlight along the interior surfaces at a low angle. The cavity is coated steel, and where the coating has chipped or rusted through — commonly on the floor and lower back wall — bare metal is exposed and arcs. Light surface rust can be sanded smooth with fine sandpaper and recoated with microwave cavity paint, following the cure time on the tin. Rust that has perforated the wall means the microwave is finished; a cavity with a hole in it cannot contain microwave energy safely.

  7. Remove the rack and its supports

    Over-the-range and larger microwaves often ship with a metal rack on stud supports. If the rack is fitted incorrectly, if a stud has lost its insulating cap, or if the rack is used on a mode the manual says not to, it will arc. Take the rack out entirely and retest with just a cup of water. If the arcing stops, the rack or its supports are the cause.

  8. Retest with a cup of water

    Put a cup of plain water in a microwave-safe container and run for one minute with the cavity otherwise empty and clean. Watch it. No arcing means you have fixed it. Arcing that persists with a clean cavity, a new waveguide cover, no rack and nothing metallic present means the fault is in the waveguide or the magnetron antenna, and that is where you stop.

When to call a pro

If arcing continues after a new waveguide cover, a clean cavity, and no metal present, the damage has reached the waveguide or the magnetron antenna cap. That is professional work — and on a countertop microwave costing $90 to $250 new, replacement almost always beats a $200 repair. Over-the-range and built-in units are worth having a technician assess. Any cavity with rust perforating the wall should be replaced rather than repaired, regardless of unit type, because a compromised cavity cannot contain microwave energy.
