A microwave that starts normally and then quits partway through is nearly always saying one of two things: it is too hot, or it has momentarily lost the door. Both have safety devices behind them doing exactly what they were designed to do, so the goal here is to find out which, and to fix the cause rather than defeat the protection. The good news is that the most common cause of the overheating version is a blocked airflow path you can clear yourself in twenty minutes.

Step by step
Note precisely when and how it quits
The pattern is the diagnosis. A unit that runs a few minutes, stops, and will not restart until it has sat for a while is overheating and tripping a thermal cutout. A unit that stops instantly the moment the door is nudged or the counter is bumped has a marginal door switch. A unit whose display goes blank and resets is losing power. And a unit that finishes a sensor programme early is not faulting at all — it has decided the food is done. Write down which of those you have.
Clear every air path
Microwaves cool the magnetron with forced air, and the vents are easy to obstruct. Check that nothing is sitting on top of the unit, that the rear and side vents have the clearance the manual specifies, and that the intake is not against a wall or a backsplash. On an over-the-range unit, pull the mesh grease filters and wash them in very hot water with a degreaser — a saturated filter starves the cooling airflow as well as the venting, and it is the single most common cause of an over-the-range unit that overheats and quits.
Check the cooling fan is actually moving air
Start a one-minute cook with a cup of water in the cavity and hold a strip of tissue at the exhaust vent. You should feel and see a clear warm airflow. If the fan is audible but nothing comes out, the airflow is blocked or the fan wheel is greased solid. If there is no fan noise at all, the fan is not running and the unit will overheat every time, which is a technician job because the fan is behind the cabinet.
Stop running near-empty or very long loads
A microwave is designed around a load absorbing the energy it produces. Very small loads, a single cup, popcorn bags run repeatedly back to back, or long defrost-then-cook sequences all push heat into the magnetron faster than the fan can remove it. If the shutdowns only happen on long or small loads, the unit may be behaving within its limits. Let it rest between uses and see whether the problem disappears — that is diagnostic in itself.
Do the door nudge test
With a cup of water running, gently rest a hand on the door — do not force it — and see whether the unit cuts out. Then open and close the door ten times and start a cook each time, noting any occasion it refuses to start or stops early. A latch hook that is cracked, a hinge that has sagged, or a door that no longer sits square lets a switch open momentarily. That is a genuine safety fault and it is where DIY stops: clean the latch area and the door face, but do not adjust or bypass anything.
Check the circuit and the outlet
A microwave draws 12 to 15 amps and wants a dedicated 20-amp circuit. On a shared circuit, another appliance starting can sag the voltage enough to reset the control, which looks exactly like a mid-cycle shutdown. Test the outlet, look for a tripped GFCI — over-the-range units are often protected from a device in another room — and try the unit on a different circuit if it is a countertop model. A unit that resets rather than stops is far more likely to be a supply problem than a thermal one.
Give it a proper reset and retest deliberately
Unplug the unit or switch off its breaker for five full minutes, which drains the control and clears a hung state. Then run a controlled test: one cup of water, full power, five minutes, with the vents clear and the filters clean. Time exactly when it stops. Repeating a measured test after each change is the only way to tell whether the filters fixed it or whether it simply had longer to cool between attempts.

The thermal cutouts, the cooling fan and the interlock switches all sit inside the cabinet next to the high-voltage capacitor, so replacing any of them is professional work regardless of skill. Call a technician if the vents are clear, the filters are clean and the unit still shuts down, and stop using it in the meantime rather than forcing cooks through. Any door-related shutdown should be treated as urgent, and a unit that trips its breaker when the door opens has an interlock monitor doing its job because a primary switch has failed — unplug it and do not use it. Weigh a $150 to $350 repair against $90 to $250 for a new countertop unit, but note that over-the-range and built-in units at $400 to $1,200 installed are well worth repairing.
