Refrigerator Not Cooling — Narrow It Down Before You Buy Parts

A refrigerator that has stopped cooling is not one fault but a family of them, and the fastest way to narrow it is to look at the freezer before the fridge. If both compartments are warm, the problem is in the machinery that makes cold — power, the condenser, the compressor circuit. If the freezer is still making ice but the fresh food section has gone warm, the cold is being made and not delivered, which points at airflow rather than refrigeration. Everything below is ordered so the free checks come first and the expensive conclusions last.

Read this first

  • Unplug the refrigerator before removing the kick plate, the rear access panel or the freezer rear wall.

Step by step

  1. Read the freezer before you touch the fridge

    Put an appliance thermometer in a glass of water in the middle of the fresh food section and a second one in the freezer, and read them after eight hours rather than eight minutes. Fresh food should sit near 37°F and the freezer near 0°F. Both warm means the sealed system, the compressor circuit or the condenser is the problem, and the steps below apply in order. Freezer near 0°F with a warm fresh food section is a different fault entirely — the cold is being produced and not distributed, so concentrate on the evaporator fan, a frosted evaporator and the air damper rather than on coils and compressors.

  2. Confirm it has power, and rule out demo mode

    An interior light that comes on proves the light circuit works and nothing else. Put your ear to the back of the cabinet: a running compressor makes a steady low hum you can feel through the sheet metal. If there is silence, plug a lamp into the same outlet, check the breaker, and look for a tripped GFCI elsewhere in the room or garage. Then check for demo or showroom mode, which many models fall into after a power event — the panel lights, the display responds, and the compressor never runs. The exit sequence is in the manual. Finally, unplug the unit for five minutes to clear a locked-up control board.

  3. Check the settings and anything that changed recently

    A dial knocked while unloading groceries, a control reset to default by an outage, or a vacation mode left switched on will all produce a warm cabinet with nothing broken. Set the fresh food compartment to the middle of its range and the freezer to 0°F, then leave it a full 24 hours before judging the result — a fridge that has been warm all day takes most of another day to pull back down. Also ask what changed physically: a unit moved into an unheated garage may simply be outside the ambient range it was designed for.

  4. Clean the condenser coils

    This is the cheapest fix on the list and the one most likely to work without buying anything. The condenser dumps the heat pulled out of the cabinet into the room. On most modern units it is a coil pack behind the front kick plate or a lower rear panel; on older designs it is a black grid across the whole back. Look for a felted grey mat of dust, lint and pet hair packed between the fins. Unplug the unit, vacuum with a brush attachment, and work a long coil brush right through the pack — the surface dust is not the problem, the compacted layer in the middle is. Repeat every six months, or every three with shedding pets.

  5. Verify the condenser fan is actually spinning

    The condenser fan sits in the same compartment as the compressor and should turn any time the compressor runs. Look at it with a flashlight while the unit is running. A blade stopped by a plastic bag pulled up off the floor, a seized bearing, or a motor failed open all starve the coils of air — the same symptom as coils caked in dust. With the fridge unplugged, spin the blade by hand; it should coast freely with no grinding. A compressor running hot because its fan has quit eventually trips its internal overload, which you hear as a click every few minutes.

  6. Open the freezer rear panel and look at the evaporator

    Empty the freezer, unplug the unit, and take off the rear interior wall of the freezer — usually a handful of screws behind the shelf brackets. A light, even dusting of frost on the coil fins is what you want to see. A solid white slab packed into the fins means the automatic defrost system has quit, and once that coil is blocked no air moves through it, so both compartments go warm even though the compressor runs perfectly. Do not attack it with anything hard. Leave the doors open with towels down for 24 to 48 hours until it is clear, then see whether the ice returns within a week.

  7. Test the evaporator fan and the defrost circuit

    With the rear panel off, find the evaporator fan at the top of the compartment. On most models the door switches it off, so it will not run with the door open — press the switch in with a pen and listen for it to spin up. If it does nothing, or grinds and wobbles, the motor is the fault. Then test the parts that caused the ice slab: the defrost heater should show continuity rather than an open circuit, and the defrost thermostat, a small bimetal disc clipped to the coil, should show continuity while frozen and open as it warms in your hand. Either one failing produces the same block of ice.

  8. Listen to the compressor and check the start relay

    A compressor that clicks on, runs for a second or two, then clicks off again every few minutes — sometimes with the room lights dimming as it tries — is not necessarily dead. That pattern usually means the start relay cannot get it running and the internal overload is cutting it off. Unplug the fridge, pull the cover off the side of the compressor, and unplug the relay. Shake it: a rattle means the contacts have broken up. It is a cheap part and a ten-minute job, worth doing promptly, because repeatedly stalling a compressor is what eventually kills it. If a new relay clicks the same way, the compressor windings are the problem.

  9. Check the door seals, the vents and how it is loaded

    Close each door on a dollar bill at several points around the perimeter and pull. Anywhere it slides out with no drag is leaking warm room air continuously. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water before condemning it — sticky residue stops a good seal from closing. Then look inside: the air inlet and return vents between the freezer and fresh food section have to stay clear, and a compartment packed solid to the back wall blocks them. Check the interior light actually goes off when the door shuts, since a bulb burning in a closed cabinet adds real heat. Finally, respect the manufacturer's clearance at the sides, rear and top.

When to call a pro

If the coils are clean, both fans run, the defrost circuit tests good and the compressor runs continuously without the evaporator ever getting cold, you are looking at the sealed system — a low refrigerant charge, a restriction in the capillary tube, or a compressor that has lost compression. Telltale signs are a suction line that never gets cold to the touch, frost on only the first few inches of the evaporator, or an oily residue around a weld joint. Opening that system legally requires EPA Section 608 certification and recovery equipment, so it is not a DIY repair. Expect $400–$900, and get that quote before committing on a unit over ten years old.
