Before you assume something is broken, know what normal looks like. A modern, efficient refrigerator genuinely runs 80–90 percent of the time, and many inverter-compressor models never fully stop — they just modulate speed. What is not normal is a fridge that runs constantly and still cannot hold 37°F, or one that has visibly driven up your power bill. That combination points at heat getting in, heat not getting out, or a defrost system that has quit.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the fridge is actually failing to hold temperature

    Put a thermometer in a glass of water in the fresh food section and another in the freezer, and read them after eight hours. Fresh food should hold near 37°F and the freezer near 0°F. If both are on target, a high duty cycle is normal behaviour and no repair is needed. If the box is warm and the compressor never rests, keep going — that is a real fault.

  2. Clean the condenser coils

    Dust and pet hair on the condenser is the number one cause of a fridge that runs without stopping. The coils shed the heat pulled out of the cabinet; blanket them and the unit simply cannot reject heat fast enough to satisfy the thermostat. Unplug the unit, pull the kick plate or rear panel, and vacuum the coils thoroughly with a brush attachment and a long coil brush. Do this every six months, and every three if you have shedding pets.

  3. Verify the condenser fan is running

    With the fridge running, listen and look at the compartment behind the kick plate. The condenser fan should be spinning whenever the compressor runs. A blade jammed by a plastic bag, a seized bearing, or a dead motor all mean the coils get no airflow, which produces exactly the same result as dirty coils. Check that the blade turns freely by hand with the unit unplugged.

  4. Check every door seal

    Close each door on a dollar bill at six points around the perimeter and pull. If it slides out with no resistance anywhere, that section is not sealing and warm room air is leaking in continuously. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water first — sticky residue often stops a good gasket from closing. Check the door light switch too; a light that stays on inside a closed cabinet adds real heat.

  5. Look for frost on the evaporator

    Empty the freezer and remove the rear panel. A light, even dusting of frost on the coil is normal. A solid slab of ice packed into the fins means the defrost system has quit, and the fridge is running non-stop trying to push air through a block of ice. Do not chip at it — thaw the cabinet with the doors open for 24 hours with towels down, then confirm whether it comes back.

  6. Test the defrost heater and defrost thermostat

    With the fridge unplugged and the evaporator exposed, test the defrost heater for continuity — a good element typically measures somewhere in the 10–40 ohm range and a dead one reads open. Then test the defrost thermostat, the small bimetal disc clipped to the coil. It should show continuity while it is still frozen and open up as it warms. Either part failing produces the ice slab in the previous step, and both are inexpensive.

  7. Check where the fridge lives

    Ambient conditions matter more than people expect. A fridge in an unconditioned garage, in direct sun, wedged tight against a wall, or beside an oven will run far harder than one in a kitchen. Manufacturers specify a minimum clearance — typically an inch at the sides and rear and a couple of inches on top — and a rated ambient range. A standard fridge in an unheated garage in winter can actually stop cooling the freezer entirely because the thermostat never sees a warm enough room.

When to call a pro

If the coils are clean, the fans run, the seals are good and the defrost circuit tests fine but the unit still cannot pull the cabinet down to temperature, you are looking at a low refrigerant charge, a restriction in the capillary tube, or a weakening compressor. All three are sealed-system faults that legally require EPA Section 608 certification to repair, and typically run $400–$900. On a fridge over ten years old, replacement usually makes more financial sense.
