Refrigerators are full of normal noises — gurgling refrigerant, the crack of expanding plastic, water hitting the ice bin, an inverter compressor changing speed. The trick is separating those from the three sounds that mean a part is dying: a squeal or chirp from a fan, a repeating click from the start relay, and a rattle from something loose. This guide matches the sound to the source so you are not replacing parts on a guess.

Step by step
Locate the sound before you diagnose it
Open the freezer door with the fridge running. If the noise gets louder or changes pitch, it is the evaporator fan inside the freezer. If it goes quiet the moment the door opens, it is also the evaporator fan — most models cut that fan on a door switch. If the door makes no difference and the sound comes from low at the back, it is the condenser fan, the compressor, or the drain pan. A cardboard tube held to your ear works surprisingly well as a stethoscope.
Chirping, squealing or grinding from the freezer
That is the evaporator fan motor, and it is the most commonly replaced noisy part in a refrigerator. Bearings dry out, or ice contacts the blade. Unplug the unit, remove the freezer rear panel, and spin the blade by hand — it should coast freely and silently. Any grit, wobble or resistance means the motor is done. Also check for a frost buildup that the blade is striking, which points at a separate defrost problem.
Repeated clicking every few minutes
A click roughly every three to five minutes, sometimes with the lights dimming, is the compressor start relay trying and failing to start the compressor. Unplug the fridge, pull the relay off the side of the compressor, and shake it. If it rattles, the internal contacts have burned out and the relay needs replacing — a $15–$45 part that takes ten minutes. Replace it promptly; a relay that keeps kicking the compressor into overload will eventually kill the compressor.
Rattling or vibration from the bottom rear
Pull the kick plate and check three things. First, the drain pan — it works loose and buzzes against the frame; reseating it or shimming it with a strip of adhesive foam usually cures it. Second, the condenser fan blade, which rattles if a shroud screw has backed out or if debris is caught in it. Third, the compressor mounting grommets, which harden with age and let the whole compressor drum against the base.
Buzzing that comes and goes on a schedule
A buzz lasting five to fifteen seconds every couple of hours is almost always the water inlet valve filling the ice maker, and it is normal. If it buzzes but no water arrives, the supply is off or the valve screen is clogged. A constant buzz that never stops is different — check the condenser fan blade for a bent tip contacting the shroud, and check that nothing metal is resting on top of the cabinet.
Knocking or banging on startup
Some knock as the compressor starts is normal, especially on older reciprocating compressors. What is not normal is a hard bang that shakes the cabinet. Check the leveling legs first — a fridge sitting on three of four feet transmits every vibration into the floor. Then check clearance at the sides and back; a cabinet touching a wall or a neighbouring cabinet turns a small vibration into a loud one.
Level the cabinet and retest
Before ordering any part, level the unit side to side with a bubble level on the top surface and set it tilted very slightly back so the doors self-close. Then move it out from the wall by an inch or two and run it. A meaningful share of noise complaints are resonance between the cabinet and the surrounding structure rather than a failing component, and this step costs nothing.
