Almost every household refrigerator has one evaporator coil, and it lives in the freezer. The freezer is cooled directly by that coil; the fresh food section is cooled only by air blown across the coil and pushed through a duct and a damper into the upper cabinet. That single design fact explains this entire fault. If the freezer is holding hard-frozen while the fresh food section drifts toward room temperature, the cooling system is doing its job and the cold air simply is not arriving. You are looking for a stopped fan, a closed damper, or a duct packed with ice — not a refrigerant problem.

- Unplug the refrigerator before removing the freezer rear panel or testing any component.
- Never chip ice off an evaporator with a screwdriver, knife or ice pick. Puncturing a coil tube releases the refrigerant charge and turns a cheap repair into a dead appliance.
- Move perishable food to coolers before you start — a full manual defrost takes the cabinet out of service for a day.
- The freezer rear panel often has sharp sheet-metal edges and the fan blade is right behind it. Wear gloves.
Step by step
Confirm both compartments with a real thermometer
Do not trust the display panel, which reports the setpoint rather than reality. Put an appliance thermometer in a glass of water in the fresh food section and a second one between packages in the freezer, and read both after eight hours. The pattern that sends you through this guide is a freezer at or near 0°F with a fresh food section well above 40°F. If the freezer is also warm, this is not an airflow fault and you should be working through a whole-system diagnosis instead — coils, condenser fan, start relay and door seals.
Listen for the evaporator fan
This is the single most informative test in the guide and it takes ten seconds. Open the freezer and find the door switch — a plunger in the frame or a magnetic reed switch in the liner. Hold it in, or tape it down, and listen. You should hear a fan spin up behind the rear panel of the freezer within a few seconds. Silence, or a fan that starts and stops, points straight at the evaporator fan motor or at ice fouling its blade. A cabinet that has gone noticeably quieter than it used to be is the same clue.
Feel for air at the fresh food vent
Find the air inlet in the fresh food section — usually a louvred grille high on the rear wall, or in the ceiling on French-door models. Hold a strip of tissue in front of it with the door switch held in. Strong steady airflow means the fan and duct are fine and you should look at the damper and the sensors. Weak or no airflow with a fan you can clearly hear running means the duct between the freezer and the fresh food section is obstructed, which on most cabinets means ice.
Pull the freezer rear panel and look at the coil
Empty the freezer, unplug the unit, and remove the rear panel — usually a handful of screws plus a few clips, and sometimes the lower shelves or an ice maker come out first. A light even frost across the fins is normal. A solid slab of ice packed into the fins, or ice built up around the fan shroud and the duct opening, means the defrost system has stopped working and the ice is now blocking the air path. Ice in that position blocks the air path directly, which is exactly the symptom you are chasing, so treat a slab here as the finding rather than a side observation.
Check the fan blade and motor
With the ice cleared or thawed, spin the fan blade by hand. It should coast freely and silently. Grit, wobble, or a blade that will not turn means the motor has failed or its bearing has seized. Check the blade itself for a cracked hub or a tip that has been rubbing the shroud, and check the wiring harness at the motor for a connector pulled loose or a wire chafed through where it passes the panel edge. Motors are inexpensive and are one of the most commonly replaced parts behind that panel.
Test the damper
The damper is the flap that meters freezer air into the fresh food section, usually behind a housing at the top rear or in the ceiling of the fresh food compartment. Pull the cover and look at it. A damper stuck closed starves the upper cabinet no matter how well the fan runs. Check that the flap moves freely, that the foam seal has not crumbled and jammed it, and that ice has not formed behind it. On motorised dampers, listen for the motor to drive when you raise the fresh food setpoint.
Test the defrost circuit if you found an ice slab
Ice on the coil is a symptom, not the fault. With the unit unplugged, test the defrost heater for continuity — an open reading means it has burned out. Then test the defrost thermostat, the small bimetal disc clipped to the coil tubing, while it is still frozen; it should show continuity cold and open as it warms. Either part failing lets frost build until it blocks the air path. Clear the defrost drain while you are in there, because meltwater that cannot leave refreezes at the base of the coil.
Check the thermistor and the duct on the fresh food side
If air is moving and the damper works, the control may simply not be asking for cooling. Find the thermistor clipped near the fresh food air inlet, unplug it, and measure its resistance against the chart on the tech sheet behind the kick plate. A sensor far off the chart makes the control believe the compartment is already cold. On French-door and some side-by-side cabinets the air also travels through a duct moulded into the cabinet wall — check that duct for ice, and check that nothing on the top shelf is jammed against the outlet.

When to call a pro
One thing worth knowing before you take a quote: because the freezer is still cold, the sealed system and compressor are almost certainly working. Be sceptical of a diagnosis on this symptom that goes straight to a refrigerant recharge, and ask what test led there. Where a technician genuinely earns the fee is the case where the fan, damper, thermistor and defrost parts all check out and the main control board is not driving them — boards are not returnable once installed and are worth confirming by measurement. On a cabinet where reaching the evaporator means dismantling built-in shelving or an ice maker assembly, the labour is also reasonable to hand over.
