The interior light is trivial to live without and worth fixing anyway, because the same door switch that controls it usually also controls the evaporator fan and the dispenser. There are only four things in the circuit — the bulb or LED module, the socket, the door switch, and on newer cabinets the control board that drives it. The order below tests them from cheapest to most expensive, and it starts with a question that matters more than the bulb: whether your fridge has a bulb at all.

- Unplug the refrigerator before removing a light housing, a switch or a socket. The lighting circuit is live even when the compressor is off.
- Use only an appliance-rated bulb of the wattage marked at the socket. Over-lamping cooks the socket and can scorch the liner.
- A light that stays on inside a closed cabinet is a real problem, not a curiosity — it adds heat continuously and on some models has been known to deform the liner or the shelf above it. Take the bulb out until the switch is fixed.
- Let a bulb that has been on for a while cool before touching it.
Step by step
Find out whether you have a bulb or an LED module
This decides everything that follows. Older refrigerators use a screw-in appliance bulb behind a plastic shield, and that bulb is a consumable you can replace in two minutes. Most cabinets built in the last decade use an LED module — a sealed board and lens assembly that is not user-relampable and is replaced as a unit. Look behind the light cover: a glass envelope and a threaded base means a bulb, a flat board with several small emitters means a module. Your model documentation or a parts diagram for your model number will confirm it.
Test the door switch by hand
Find the switch — a spring-loaded plunger in the door frame, or on many recent models a magnetic reed switch hidden in the liner with no visible moving part. With the door open, press the plunger in and release it a few times. If the light does not go out when pressed, or does not come back when released, the switch is failing. On a magnetic switch, pass a fridge magnet along the liner where the door magnet would sit and watch the light. It costs nothing, needs no tools, and eliminates the whole switch branch of the diagnosis in one go.
Deal with a switch that is stuck on
The opposite fault matters more. If the light stays on with the door closed, the cabinet is being heated continuously by the lamp, which drives up run time and, in a confined compartment with an incandescent bulb, can get hot enough to damage the liner or the shelf above it. Confirm it by closing the door on a piece of paper and looking through the gap, or by listening for the click. Until you have replaced the switch, remove the bulb entirely — that costs you nothing and removes the risk.
Swap in a known-good bulb
On a bulb model, unplug the fridge, unclip the shield, and fit a bulb you know works. Use an appliance-rated bulb — ordinary household bulbs are not built for the vibration and the temperature swing, and their filaments fail quickly in a refrigerator. Check the wattage marked on or near the socket and do not exceed it. If the new bulb also does nothing, the fault is upstream and you have ruled out the cheapest part for a few dollars.
Inspect the socket
With the unit unplugged, look into the socket with a flashlight. You are looking for a centre contact that has been pressed flat, corrosion on the threads, or browning and heat damage around the shell — which usually means somebody fitted an over-wattage bulb at some point. Gently lift a flattened centre contact with a small screwdriver. If the shell is discoloured or the plastic around it has softened, replace the socket rather than the bulb; a heat-damaged socket will keep failing.
Test the switch electrically
Unplug the refrigerator, remove the switch — most pop out with a plastic trim tool, some are held by a single screw — and check it with a multimeter. A door switch usually has more than two terminals because it controls the lamp and the evaporator fan on separate contacts, so test each pair as you operate the plunger and confirm one pair makes while the other breaks. A switch that reads open on the lamp contacts in both positions is finished, and it is one of the cheapest parts on the appliance.
Check the LED module and its supply
LED assemblies fail as units, and they fail in recognisable ways: a strip where some emitters light and others do not, a light that flickers, or one that has gone dark entirely. Before ordering one, unplug the fridge for five minutes to clear a hung control state, then check the connector at the module for a pin that has backed out. If the module is dead and the switch tests good, replacement is the repair — expect it to cost meaningfully more than a bulb, and check availability for your model number before you commit.

When to call a pro
This is one of the few refrigerator faults where paying for a service call rarely makes sense on a bulb model — the parts are inexpensive and the access is easy. It becomes worth handing over on cabinets where the LED module sits behind the control housing or inside a door panel that has to be dismantled, and on models where the light is driven by an output on the main control board, since a board diagnosis needs measurement rather than substitution. If you find scorching or melted plastic around the socket or the wiring, stop and have it inspected rather than refitting a bulb.
