A dead water dispenser usually comes down to one of three things: no water getting to the fridge, a plug of ice in the line running up the door, or a valve that is not opening. All three are diagnosable in under an hour without special tools, and the cheapest fix — a filter that is simply overdue — accounts for a large share of them.

Step by step
Rule out the control lock and dispenser mode
Start with the free fix. Almost every dispenser fridge has a control lock that disables the pad, usually a padlock icon you hold for three seconds. Check that it is off. On models with a combined ice and water dispenser, confirm the selector is set to water rather than cubed or crushed ice. Also check whether the fridge has been in a demo or showroom mode since a power outage — that mode lights the panel but disables water.
Replace the water filter — and try running without one
Filters are rated for roughly six months or 200–300 gallons. A clogged filter chokes flow to a trickle and then to nothing. Swap in a fresh cartridge and run two gallons through to purge the air. If a new filter changes nothing, pull the filter entirely and fit the bypass plug that came with the fridge (or simply reinstall the old filter) — if water flows freely with the filter bypassed, you have a bad or mismatched cartridge, which happens often with off-brand filters.
Confirm the house supply is actually on
Find the shutoff, usually a saddle valve or quarter-turn stop under the sink or behind the fridge, and make sure it is fully open. Then check pressure: a fridge needs a minimum of about 20 psi at the valve, and 40–120 psi is the normal household range. If your home is on a reverse-osmosis system, that is a frequent culprit — RO output pressure is often too low for a fridge unless a booster pump is fitted.
Thaw a frozen line in the door
This is the classic one on a fridge that dispenses ice fine but no water. The water tube runs through the door hinge area, and if the fresh food compartment is running below about 34°F, the water sitting in that tube freezes. Turn the fresh food setting up a couple of degrees, then warm the tube where it enters the door with a hair dryer on low for ten minutes. If water returns, the underlying cause is the fridge running too cold — fix that or it will refreeze.
Check the reservoir tank
Most fridges hold about half a gallon of chilled water in a coiled tank tucked behind the crisper drawers. Pull the drawer and inspect the coil for a section that is frozen solid or a fitting that has popped. A frozen reservoir gives you exactly the same symptom as a frozen door line and has the same root cause — a fresh food compartment running colder than spec.
Test the water inlet valve
The inlet valve sits at the lower rear of the cabinet where the supply line lands. With the fridge unplugged, unplug the valve connector and measure the solenoid coil resistance with a multimeter — most read in the 200–500 ohm range, and an open reading means a dead coil. You can also listen: press the dispenser pad and put an ear to the back of the fridge. A buzz with no water usually means the valve is energised but the screen inside it is silted up.
Test the dispenser switch and actuator
If nothing at all happens when you press the pad — no buzz, no light change — the fault may be in the dispenser itself. Remove the dispenser front panel and find the micro switch behind the paddle. Press it by hand and listen for a distinct click, then test it for continuity with a multimeter. A worn actuator arm that no longer reaches the switch is a common and inexpensive failure.

When to call a pro
If the valve tests good, the filter is new, supply pressure is confirmed, and the dispenser switch has continuity, the fault is in the dispenser control board or the main board — a diagnosis worth paying for rather than guessing at, since dispenser boards run $120–$300 and are not returnable once installed. Any repair that requires opening the sealed refrigeration system is EPA-certified work.
