Condensation on the outside of a refrigerator is physics before it is a fault. Any surface sitting below the dew point of the air around it collects water, and parts of a refrigerator door — the frame, the metal strip between French doors, the area around a dispenser — are deliberately close to the cold side. Manufacturers fit small heaters to keep those surfaces above dew point, and many models let you switch them off in an energy-saving mode. So the first question is not what has broken but what changed: the weather, a setting, or a seal.
Read this first
- Unplug the refrigerator before removing a mullion, a door panel or any housing that contains wiring.
- Water running down a cabinet onto a live outlet or an extension lead is a shock hazard. Dry the area and deal with the source before anything else.
- Do not tape over or block cabinet vents to stop condensation. Restricting airflow makes the appliance run harder and makes the problem worse.
- Leave water on a wood or laminate floor for a few days and it will swell the floor. Put a towel down while you work through this.
Step by step
Note exactly where the water forms and when
The location narrows this immediately. Beads on the flat face of a door usually mean humid room air and a cold panel. Water on the vertical strip between French doors, or on the frame around a freezer drawer, points at the anti-sweat heater in that strip. Water inside the cabinet rather than on it is a different problem — that is a seal or a damper issue. Wipe everything dry, then check morning and evening for a few days and write down what you see, because a pattern that tracks the weather tells you a great deal.
Measure the room's humidity
Put a cheap hygrometer next to the refrigerator and read it over a couple of days. As relative humidity climbs, more surfaces fall below dew point and condensation appears on things that were dry all winter. If your reading is high and the sweating started with the season, the appliance is behaving normally and a dehumidifier, better kitchen ventilation, or running an extractor while cooking will do more than any part you can fit. This is also worth knowing before you spend money: nothing you replace will stop condensation in a genuinely humid room.
Check whether energy saver mode is switched on
This is the setting people do not know they have. Many refrigerators carry an energy-saver or power-save option that switches off the small heaters in the door frame and the mullion. It saves a little electricity, and because it changes how the appliance behaves without anything having failed, it is the first thing to rule out on a cabinet that never used to sweat. Look for it in the control panel menu or as a dedicated button, turn it off, and give the cabinet a day. If the sweating stops, that is your answer and the trade-off is yours to make.
Test the door seals
Close each door on a dollar bill at six points around the perimeter and pull. Anywhere it slides out without drag, humid room air is being drawn into the cabinet and cold is leaking out onto the door face. Clean the gaskets with warm soapy water first, because sticky residue stops a perfectly good seal from closing, and warm any flattened section with a hair dryer on low and press it back into shape. Check the flexible strip between French doors folds and seats properly as the door closes.
Watch how the doors close and check the levelling
Put a bubble level on top of the cabinet. A refrigerator should sit level side to side and tilted very slightly back so the doors swing themselves shut. Adjust the front levelling legs. Then open each door six inches and let go — it should close on its own and stay closed. A door that stops short, or one that has to be pushed the last inch, is not compressing its gasket, and a heavy door on tired hinges sags at the handle side and opens the seal at the top corner.
Check for a door that is being left ajar
Watch the cabinet in normal household use for a day. An overfilled door bin, a bottle catching the shelf, a drawer not pushed fully home, or an ice bin fouling the door all stop a door latching, and a door held open by a few millimetres for hours will condense water everywhere. Check the door alarm works if your model has one. Also check the door switch actually cuts the light off, because a light left burning is adding heat and humidity inside the cabinet.
Consider where the refrigerator lives
A cabinet in a garage, a basement, an unconditioned porch or a tightly enclosed cabinet surround sits in far more humid, still air than one in a kitchen. Confirm the manufacturer's clearance requirements for your model — most specify a gap at the sides, the rear and above — and make sure warm air can actually leave the condenser area. A refrigerator jammed into a recess recirculates its own hot, damp exhaust, and that shows up as sweating on the outside of the doors.
Suspect the anti-sweat heater last
If energy saver is off, the room is not unusually humid, the seals and hinges are sound, and one specific area — typically the mullion strip or the frame around a dispenser or drawer — is reliably wet while everything else stays dry, the heater in that area may have failed or lost its connection. That is a wiring and control diagnosis rather than a cleaning job, and on most cabinets the strip is sold as a complete assembly. Confirm the setting first, though, because a switched-off heater and a failed heater look identical.

When to call a pro
Call a technician when a specific heated area stays wet with energy saver confirmed off and the seals confirmed good, since testing a mullion heater circuit means getting into the wiring behind a door or a frame. It is also worth handing over any built-in or column refrigerator, where the door and frame assemblies are heavier, tighter to the cabinetry and considerably less forgiving to dismantle. If you find water has reached an outlet, a junction box or the electrical compartment, deal with that before running the appliance again.
