Ice Maker repair near you

Ice makers fail more often than the refrigerators that house them. Water supply and fill-valve faults account for most no-ice calls, and both are inexpensive fixes once someone has confirmed which side of the system is at fault.

147 of the 873 businesses in this directory list ice maker repair, across 45 states and 88 cities. Below them: what actually fails, what the repair costs, and when replacing is the better call.

Common ice maker faults, and what each one usually is

Symptom, the cause it most often turns out to be, and whether it is homeowner work or a job that has to go to a licensed technician.

An ice maker is a small machine bolted inside a bigger one, and the first question is always whether the problem is water getting in or ice getting out. No water reaching the mould points at the supply line, the saddle valve, a frozen fill tube, or the inlet valve. Water arriving but no ice ejecting points at the module, the thermostat, or the ejector motor.

Standalone and undercounter ice machines are a different proposition again. They run a proper condenser and evaporator, they need periodic descaling and sanitising, and neglecting that is the most common reason a commercial-style unit stops producing. If yours lives under a counter rather than inside a fridge, its maintenance schedule matters more than any part on it.

Technician
Needs a technician — meter diagnosis, a model-matched part, or teardown that is easy to get wrong.
Homeowner fix
Safe for a homeowner with basic tools once the appliance is unplugged or the breaker is off.
Licensed trade only
Gas piping, sealed refrigerant systems, or fixed wiring. Licensed and, for refrigerant, EPA Section 608 certified technicians only.

  • Cubes are small, hollow, or only partly formed

    Homeowner fix

Low water pressure, a clogged filter overdue for replacement, or a partially blocked fill tube.

Step-by-step: Ice Maker Slow or Making Small Cubes
  • Ice smells or tastes stale

    Homeowner fix

An overdue water filter, or ice that has sat long enough to absorb freezer odours. Ice is porous and picks up everything around it.

  • Mould fills with water but never ejects

    Technician

The icemaker module, the mould thermostat, or the ejector motor. On most units the module is replaced as one assembly.

Step-by-step: Ice Maker Not Making Ice
  • Ice cubes fused into one solid block in the bin

    Technician

Slow usage plus a freezer running slightly warm, or a leaking fill valve dribbling water into the bin between cycles.

  • Water running down the back inside of the freezer

    Technician

A fill tube that has frozen and diverted the fill, or a fill valve not closing fully.

  • Undercounter machine produces less and less

    Technician

Scale on the evaporator and a condenser that has not been cleaned. These need descaling and sanitising on a schedule.

Step-by-step: Ice Maker Slow or Making Small Cubes
  • Standalone machine not cooling at all

    Licensed trade only

A sealed-system fault in the machine's own refrigeration circuit — EPA Section 608 territory.

Maintenance that prevents those failures

Each item below maps directly onto a fault in the list above. This is the whole of ice maker preventive maintenance — there is nothing else worth doing.

  • Replace the water filter on schedule

    Every 6 months

Prevents: Small hollow cubes, slow fills, and a strained inlet valve.

  • Empty the bin fully and let it refill

    Monthly

Prevents: Fused blocks of ice and stale-tasting cubes.

  • Check the supply line for kinks behind the fridge

    After any move

Prevents: The most common no-ice call after a kitchen reshuffle.

  • Descale and sanitise an undercounter machine

    Annually

Prevents: Falling production and the eventual evaporator service.

  • Keep the freezer at 0–5°F

    Check quarterly

Prevents: Slow harvest cycles and cubes that fuse in the bin.

In-fridge icemakers are largely model-specific assemblies, so the technician needs your refrigerator's model number, not the icemaker's. Undercounter machines from Sub-Zero, U-Line, Marvel and Scotsman need a technician who explicitly services that category.

What ice maker repair costs

National ranges for parts and labor together, before the diagnostic fee. Regional labor rates move these by roughly 20% either way, and no figure here is a quote.

Typical ice maker repair jobs with national cost ranges.
RepairParts + labor
Thaw a frozen fill tube and clear the supplyOften the entire fix on a no-ice call.$80–$160
Water filter replacement and pressure checkCheapest cause of small or hollow cubes.$60–$140
Water inlet valveThe single most common ice-maker part failure.$150–$300
Icemaker module or ejector assemblyUsually supplied and replaced as one unit.$200–$400
Mould thermostat or bin-level sensorSymptom is a machine that fills but never harvests.$150–$300
Complete in-fridge icemaker assemblyOften cheaper than chasing individual parts on an older unit.$250–$450
Undercounter descale and sanitise serviceScheduled maintenance, not a repair — book it annually.$150–$300

A quote above $200 on a ice maker past 5 years old is usually money better spent on a replacement. Below that line, and with life left on the clock, repair wins almost every time.

How long a ice maker lasts

5–10 years for an icemaker inside a refrigerator — noticeably shorter than the fridge around it. Standalone and undercounter machines reach 10–15 with proper descaling.

Water quality decides this. Hard water scales the fill valve and mould, and a filter left in past its interval restricts flow enough to make the valve work against pressure it was not designed for. Both shorten the life of the cheapest part in the system.

When replacing beats repairing

  • The complete assembly is quoted above roughly $200 on a refrigerator that is itself past year ten.
  • The fridge has other faults — an icemaker is rarely worth fixing on a cabinet nearing the end of its life.
  • A standalone machine needs sealed-system work at year eight or later.
  • The bin, auger or dispenser chute is cracked, which usually means a whole-door part.

Ice Maker repair — common questions

Why is my ice maker not making ice?
Start by checking whether the mould fills with water. If it stays dry, the problem is on the supply side — a closed shut-off valve, a kinked line, a frozen fill tube, or a failed inlet valve. If it fills but never ejects, the icemaker module, the mould thermostat, or the ejector motor is at fault.
How much does ice maker repair cost?
$150–$400 for most in-refrigerator repairs, plus a $50–$100 diagnostic. A water inlet valve is $150–$300, a complete icemaker assembly $250–$450. Standalone machines needing sealed-system work run $400–$800.
Why are my ice cubes small or hollow?
Low water pressure at the mould. The usual cause is a water filter well past its replacement interval, followed by a partially frozen fill tube and a failing inlet valve. Change the filter first — it is the cheapest test available.
Why does my ice taste bad?
Ice is porous and absorbs freezer odours, so old ice tastes of whatever else is in the freezer. Empty the bin completely, replace the water filter, and let it make a fresh batch. If it still tastes off, the supply line itself may be the source.
How long does a refrigerator ice maker last?
5–10 years, which is shorter than the refrigerator it sits inside. Water hardness is the main variable — regular filter changes are what push a unit toward the upper end of that range.
Is it worth repairing an ice maker?
Yes when the refrigerator has years left: a $150–$300 valve on a five-year-old fridge is good value. It is rarely worth a $400 assembly on a cabinet already past year ten, since the fridge itself is nearing replacement.
Why is ice fusing into one solid block?
Either the ice is sitting too long between uses, or the fill valve is leaking slightly and dribbling water into the bin between cycles. Empty the bin and watch it for a day: if a fresh batch fuses again quickly, the valve is the cause.
