Ice is essentially frozen air and water, and it picks up both. Bad-tasting ice almost never means a broken ice maker — it means the water arriving is stale, the bin has become a sponge for freezer odours, or something uncovered in the freezer is being absorbed into cubes that sat there for months. Work through the sources in order of likelihood and the fix is usually a new filter and a bin wash.
Read this first
- Never use bleach, ammonia or scented cleaners inside a freezer or an ice bin. Ice absorbs odour readily and those residues end up in a drink.
- Do not pour hot water into a cold plastic ice bin — the thermal shock cracks it.
- Unplug the appliance before removing the ice maker or working near the fill tube.
- Discard all existing ice before you start. Continuing to use tainted ice while you diagnose just re-contaminates a clean bin.
Step by step
Throw away everything in the bin and discard two more batches
Old ice is the problem far more often than new ice. Cubes sublimate slowly in a frost-free freezer, concentrating whatever they absorbed, and a bin that has sat half full since last summer will taste of the freezer regardless of how clean the water is. Empty it completely, then discard the next two full batches the machine makes after any change you make below — otherwise you are tasting the old water still sitting in the lines.
Replace the water filter and purge properly
Filters are rated for roughly six months or 200 to 300 gallons. Past that they stop adsorbing and can start releasing what they have collected, which is exactly the musty taste people describe. Fit a genuine or verified-compatible cartridge, then run at least two gallons through the dispenser to purge the carbon fines and trapped air. Off-brand cartridges that are dimensionally close but not exact are a frequent cause of a taste problem that appeared right after a filter change.
Wash the bin, the chute and the auger
Take the bin out and wash it in warm — not hot — soapy water, working a soft brush around the auger and into the corners where old melt has pooled. Rinse thoroughly and dry it completely before refitting; a damp bin re-freezes into a sheet. Then look up into the ice chute and the dispenser flap with a flashlight and wipe those too, because that duct holds melted residue and is rarely cleaned by anyone.
Hunt for uncovered food in the freezer
Frost-free freezers circulate air continuously, and that air carries odour from anything not sealed. Open onions, garlic bread, fish, leftovers in a loosely covered dish, and freezer-burned meat in torn packaging are all classic offenders. Go through the whole freezer, seal or bin anything uncovered, and wipe out any spills. Then put an open box of baking soda in the freezer and leave it — replace it every couple of months.
Check the water supply line itself
The line running to the appliance can be the source, particularly if it is old grey polyethylene tubing rather than modern PEX or copper, or if it runs a long way and the appliance is used lightly so water sits in it for days. Saddle valves — the small clamp-on valves used on older installations — are notorious for corroding and tainting water. Replacing a run of tubing is cheap and it is a permanent fix where the line is the cause.
Taste the tap water for comparison
Fill a glass from the same cold line the appliance is fed from and taste it, then taste water from the dispenser. If the tap water tastes the same as the ice, the problem is your household water, not the ice maker, and a filter or a whole-house treatment is the answer. If the tap tastes fine and the dispenser does not, the fault is between the wall and the mould — filter, tubing, valve or reservoir.
Flush the reservoir on dispenser models
Fridges with a water dispenser store roughly half a gallon in a coiled tank behind the crisper drawers, and on a lightly used dispenser that water can sit for a week. Draw off two full gallons through the dispenser to turn the reservoir over completely. If the taste improves markedly and then returns after a few idle days, you have confirmed stagnation rather than contamination, and the answer is to use the dispenser more or draw a glass off daily.
Prevent it coming back
Use the ice. An ice maker that turns its bin over every week or two never develops a taste problem, while one that fills a bin and sits produces cubes that have spent months absorbing freezer air. If you are away for a long period, switch the ice maker off and empty the bin rather than leaving it to sit. Change the filter on a calendar reminder rather than when you notice a problem.

When to call a pro
If the filter is new, the bin is clean, the freezer has no odour source and the tap water tastes fine but the ice still does not, the problem is likely in the tubing inside the appliance or in a reservoir that cannot be flushed, and a technician can replace those sections. Call a plumber rather than an appliance technician if the household water itself is the source, and consider having it tested if the taste is metallic, sulphurous or chemical rather than simply stale — that is worth understanding beyond the ice maker.
