Poor cleaning and poor drying are usually plumbing and airflow problems rather than broken machines. In a dishwasher, check the filter, the spray arm jets and the water temperature before anything else — a machine fed below about 120°F will never clean or dry properly. In a dryer, a load that needs three cycles is a restricted vent nine times out of ten, and that restriction is also a fire risk.

What it usually means
A dishwasher does not fill and soak — it sprays. So performance depends entirely on the spray path staying clear: filter, sump, pump, spray arm feed tube, and the jets in the arms themselves. Block any one of those and you get the classic complaint of gritty glasses and food welded to the top rack. Loading matters as much as parts do; a tall pan laid over the lower arm stops it turning and takes half the machine out of service.
Drying is thermodynamics rather than mechanics. A dishwasher without a heating element relies on hot final-rinse water and rinse aid to sheet water off the dishes, so skipping rinse aid guarantees wet plastics. A tumble dryer relies on moving heated air through the load and out of the house — restrict the exit and the load never dries, the cycle runs long, and the machine overheats.
What to check first
Run the kitchen tap hot before starting a dishwasher
The machine draws whatever is in the line, which after a cold night is cold water. Running the tap until it is hot means the first fill is at temperature, and it is the single most effective free change you can make.
Twist out and rinse the filter
The cylinder in the sump comes out with a quarter turn. Rinse it under the tap with a soft brush. On machines that have never had it cleaned, this one step transforms the results.
Spin the spray arms by hand and clear the jets
Both arms should turn freely with a light push. Clear each jet with a straightened paperclip and flush the arm under the tap. A blocked feed tube to the upper arm is the usual reason the top rack stays dirty while the bottom is fine.
Fill the rinse aid and check the dispenser flap
Rinse aid is what makes water sheet off rather than bead, and it is the difference between dry plastics and wet ones. Also check the detergent flap is not being blocked by a tall item on the top rack — a pod still sitting in the door at the end of a cycle is nearly always a physical obstruction.
Disconnect the dryer duct and run it a minute
Strong warm airflow at the wall with the duct off means the dryer is fine and the duct is restricted. Clear the whole run, replace flexible foil with rigid or semi-rigid metal, and check the exterior flap actually opens.
Stop overloading and stop over-drying
A dryer needs the load to tumble freely to work at all, and a dishwasher needs water to reach every surface. Both are routinely asked to handle a load that physically blocks the process they depend on.
