Range Hood repair near you

Range hood work is mostly electrical and ducting rather than mechanical. Weak extraction is far more often a duct or filter problem than a failed motor — and it is the one appliance where the installation matters more than the unit.

24 of the 873 businesses in this directory list range hood repair, across 16 states and 21 cities. Below them: what actually fails, what the repair costs, and when replacing is the better call.

Common range hood faults, and what each one usually is

Symptom, the cause it most often turns out to be, and whether it is homeowner work or a job that has to go to a licensed technician.

A hood is only as good as the duct behind it. A 600 CFM unit on a long flexible run with three elbows and a stiff exterior damper may move less air than a 300 CFM unit on a short, straight rigid duct. That is why replacing a hood because it 'has no power' so often disappoints — the restriction was never the appliance.

Two other things distinguish this appliance. Recirculating hoods have no duct at all and only filter odours through charcoal, so they will never clear steam; and modern airtight houses can starve a powerful hood of make-up air, which shows up as poor extraction and, in the worst case, backdrafting a gas water heater. Both are installation questions rather than repairs.

Homeowner fix

Step-by-step: Range Hood Fan Weak or Not Venting
  • Only some speeds work

    Technician

The speed control switch or the control board. A motor that runs at all is rarely the fault.

    Technician

The lamp socket or the control board. On LED hoods the entire light module is usually the part.

Step-by-step: Range Hood Light Not Working
  • Rattling or droning at high speed

    Homeowner fix

An unbalanced blower wheel, grease build-up on the fan blades, or loose duct sections vibrating against a joist.

  • Cooking smells linger despite the hood running

    Homeowner fix

A recirculating installation with an exhausted charcoal filter, or a hood mounted too high above the cooktop.

  • Cold draught coming down through the hood when it is off

    Technician

A damper stuck open, missing, or installed the wrong way round at the exterior wall cap.

  • Hood trips the circuit, or you smell scorching at the switch

    Licensed trade only

A shorted motor winding or a fault in the fixed wiring in the wall. Licensed electrical work.

Maintenance that prevents those failures

Each item below maps directly onto a fault in the list above. This is the whole of range hood preventive maintenance — there is nothing else worth doing.

  • Degrease the mesh filters in hot water or the dishwasher

    Monthly

Prevents: The weak extraction that gets misdiagnosed as a failed motor — and a real fire risk.

  • Replace charcoal filters on recirculating hoods

    Every 6–12 months

Prevents: Odours that linger with the hood running at full speed.

  • Wipe grease off the blower wheel

    Annually

Prevents: The imbalance that causes rattling and kills motor bearings.

  • Check the exterior damper opens and closes fully

    Every 6 months

Prevents: Lost airflow, and cold draughts down the duct when the hood is off.

  • Run the hood for 10 minutes after cooking

    Every time you cook

Prevents: Moisture and grease settling on cabinets and inside the duct.

Chimney and island hoods from Bosch, Thermador, Miele, Viking and Wolf use proprietary blower and LED modules and often need brand-specific parts. Insert and liner units built into custom cabinetry are also size-specific, which is why repair usually beats replacement on them.

What range hood repair costs

National ranges for parts and labor together, before the diagnostic fee. Regional labor rates move these by roughly 20% either way, and no figure here is a quote.

How long a range hood lasts

10–15 years. Hoods have one moving part, so what actually ends their life is grease, corrosion, and kitchen remodels rather than mechanical failure.

Filters that are never washed are the cause. Grease passes the mesh, coats the blower wheel, unbalances it, and loads the motor bearings — a completely avoidable failure that also happens to be the biggest kitchen fire risk in the room.

When replacing beats repairing

  • The blower motor has failed on a hood past year ten — the part approaches the price of a new unit.
  • The quote exceeds roughly $175, half the price of a mainstream new hood before installation.
  • The housing has corroded, or the unit is a recirculating model and you can now duct outside.
  • You are remodelling; hood width has to match the cooktop, so this is the natural moment.

Range Hood repair — common questions

Why is my range hood not pulling air?
Check the filters first — grease-saturated mesh is the most common cause by a wide margin. Then the duct: long flexible runs, sharp bends and a stuck exterior damper all cut airflow sharply. A failed motor is well down the list, and a motor that runs at all is usually not the problem.
How much does range hood repair cost?
Most repairs are $150–$400 including parts and labor, plus a $50–$100 diagnostic. Switches and capacitors are at the low end, a blower motor at $250–$450 at the top, and duct work is priced separately at $200–$600.
Is a ducted or ductless range hood better?
Ducted, clearly. A ducted hood removes heat, steam, grease and combustion by-products from the house. A recirculating hood only passes air through a charcoal filter and returns it to the room, so it never removes moisture — which is why steam complaints on ductless hoods cannot be fixed with a part.
How often should I clean range hood filters?
Monthly for mesh grease filters — hot soapy water or a dishwasher cycle. Charcoal filters on recirculating hoods are not washable and are replaced every 6 to 12 months. Neglected filters are both the top cause of weak extraction and the biggest fire risk in the kitchen.
How long do range hoods last?
10–15 years. With only one moving part, what ends a hood's life is usually grease-driven motor failure, corrosion, or a kitchen remodel rather than wear.
Why does my kitchen still smell after using the hood?
Either you have a recirculating hood with an exhausted charcoal filter, or the hood is mounted too high above the cooktop to capture the plume. Most manufacturers specify 24–30 inches above an electric cooktop and 27–36 inches above gas.
Can a powerful range hood cause problems in a tight house?
Yes. High-CFM hoods in airtight homes can depressurise the space enough to backdraft a naturally vented gas water heater or furnace. Many jurisdictions require a make-up air system above a CFM threshold — ask any installer to confirm what your local code requires.
