Appliance repair
Range hood work is mostly electrical and ducting rather than mechanical. Weak extraction is far more often a duct or filter problem than a failed motor — and it is the one appliance where the installation matters more than the unit.

Symptom, the cause it most often turns out to be, and whether it is homeowner work or a job that has to go to a licensed technician.
A hood is only as good as the duct behind it. A 600 CFM unit on a long flexible run with three elbows and a stiff exterior damper may move less air than a 300 CFM unit on a short, straight rigid duct. That is why replacing a hood because it 'has no power' so often disappoints — the restriction was never the appliance.
Two other things distinguish this appliance. Recirculating hoods have no duct at all and only filter odours through charcoal, so they will never clear steam; and modern airtight houses can starve a powerful hood of make-up air, which shows up as poor extraction and, in the worst case, backdrafting a gas water heater. Both are installation questions rather than repairs.
Fan runs but barely extracts
Homeowner fixGrease-saturated mesh filters, a crushed or over-long duct run, or an exterior damper that is stuck partly closed.
Step-by-step: Range Hood Fan Weak or Not Venting →Fan will not run at any speed
TechnicianThe blower motor, the speed control switch, or the run capacitor. Capacitors fail more often than motors do.
Step-by-step: Range Hood Fan Weak or Not Venting →Only some speeds work
TechnicianThe speed control switch or the control board. A motor that runs at all is rarely the fault.
Light does not work with a known-good bulb
TechnicianThe lamp socket or the control board. On LED hoods the entire light module is usually the part.
Step-by-step: Range Hood Light Not Working →Rattling or droning at high speed
Homeowner fixAn unbalanced blower wheel, grease build-up on the fan blades, or loose duct sections vibrating against a joist.
Cooking smells linger despite the hood running
Homeowner fixA recirculating installation with an exhausted charcoal filter, or a hood mounted too high above the cooktop.
Cold draught coming down through the hood when it is off
TechnicianA damper stuck open, missing, or installed the wrong way round at the exterior wall cap.
Hood trips the circuit, or you smell scorching at the switch
Licensed trade onlyA shorted motor winding or a fault in the fixed wiring in the wall. Licensed electrical work.
Each item below maps directly onto a fault in the list above. This is the whole of range hood preventive maintenance — there is nothing else worth doing.
Degrease the mesh filters in hot water or the dishwasher
MonthlyPrevents: The weak extraction that gets misdiagnosed as a failed motor — and a real fire risk.
Replace charcoal filters on recirculating hoods
Every 6–12 monthsPrevents: Odours that linger with the hood running at full speed.
Wipe grease off the blower wheel
AnnuallyPrevents: The imbalance that causes rattling and kills motor bearings.
Check the exterior damper opens and closes fully
Every 6 monthsPrevents: Lost airflow, and cold draughts down the duct when the hood is off.
Run the hood for 10 minutes after cooking
Every time you cookPrevents: Moisture and grease settling on cabinets and inside the duct.

Counts are how many of the 24 businesses servicing range hoods name that brand. 32 distinct brands are covered in total, and 9 of these businesses hold a factory-authorized servicer credential.
Chimney and island hoods from Bosch, Thermador, Miele, Viking and Wolf use proprietary blower and LED modules and often need brand-specific parts. Insert and liner units built into custom cabinetry are also size-specific, which is why repair usually beats replacement on them.

Blue Book
A quote above $175 on a range hood past 9 years old is usually money better spent on a replacement. Below that line, and with life left on the clock, repair wins almost every time.

10–15 years. Hoods have one moving part, so what actually ends their life is grease, corrosion, and kitchen remodels rather than mechanical failure.
Filters that are never washed are the cause. Grease passes the mesh, coats the blower wheel, unbalances it, and loads the motor bearings — a completely avoidable failure that also happens to be the biggest kitchen fire risk in the room.
