A fridge that freezes lettuce, splits eggs and turns milk slushy is nearly always an air-routing problem rather than a broken compressor. Most refrigerators have one evaporator in the freezer and meter cold air into the fresh food section through a damper. When that damper sticks open, when a sensor misreads, or when food is parked directly in the airstream, the fresh food compartment drops below freezing while the numbers on the display look perfectly normal.

Step by step
Measure the real temperature
Do not trust the display. Put a glass of water in the middle of the fresh food section, leave it eight hours, and drop an appliance thermometer in it. You want 37°F, with 40°F as the upper safe limit and anything under 34°F explaining the ice damage. Take a second reading in the freezer — it should sit near 0°F. If the freezer is far colder than 0°F, the whole cabinet is being overcooled and the problem is a control, not a damper.
Check the settings and any recent changes
Someone bumping a dial or a power outage resetting a control board explains a surprising share of these calls. Set the fresh food section to the middle of its range, not the coldest. On models with a single mechanical dial, remember that dial usually controls the damper, not the compressor — turning it colder opens the damper wider and floods the fresh food section with freezer air.
Look at what is sitting in front of the vents
Find the air inlet on the rear or upper-rear wall of the fresh food section, where cold air enters from the freezer. Anything parked directly in that stream — a bag of greens, a carton of eggs, a gallon of milk on the top shelf — will freeze regardless of how well the fridge is working. Move produce to the crisper drawers, which are deliberately shielded from direct airflow, and leave a few inches of clearance around every vent.
Check the crisper and deli drawer controls
If only one drawer is freezing and the rest of the compartment is fine, stop looking at the main controls. Crisper drawers have humidity sliders, and many fridges also carry a meat keeper or deli drawer fed by its own small duct straight from the freezer, with a slider marked something like cold to coldest. Left at its coldest setting that drawer will freeze its contents while the shelves above sit at a perfectly normal 37°F. Pull the drawer right out and look at the back wall behind it for the duct opening and the slider that meters it. This is a free fix and it explains a symptom that otherwise looks baffling.
Work out which evaporator design you have
This determines what can actually be at fault. Most top-freezer and many basic models use a single evaporator in the freezer, so every bit of cold reaching the fresh food section passes through the damper — on those, a stuck damper or a mis-set control is nearly always the answer. Many side-by-side and French door models instead use two evaporators, one per compartment, each with its own fan and sensor and no damper between them at all. On a dual-evaporator fridge an over-cold fresh food section means that compartment's own sensor or its control is at fault, and hunting for a damper that does not exist wastes an afternoon. Check the model's tech sheet or look for a second coil behind the rear wall of the fresh food section.
Test the air damper
Pull off the damper housing cover, usually at the top rear of the fresh food compartment. The damper is a small motorized or bimetal-operated flap. Watch it through a cooling cycle, or move it by hand with the power off. If it is stuck open, iced over, or the foam seal has crumbled, cold air pours through continuously. A stuck damper is the most common mechanical cause of an over-cold fridge and the part is straightforward to swap. On older models with a mechanical cold control rather than an electronic damper, check that the control's capillary sensing bulb is still clipped firmly in its holder in the airstream — a bulb that has worked loose reads the wrong air and drives the compressor far longer than it should.
Test the thermistor
Electronic models use a thermistor — a small bead sensor on a wire, usually clipped near the fresh food air inlet. If it reads warmer than reality, the control keeps calling for cooling. Unplug the fridge, unclip the sensor, and measure its resistance with a multimeter, then compare it against the resistance chart on the tech sheet taped behind the kick plate or inside the control housing. A sensor that is wildly off the chart, or that reads open, needs replacing.
Check the door seal and the door switch
It sounds backwards, but a leaking gasket can cause freezing. Warm humid air leaking in makes the unit run almost continuously, and continuous run time means the damper is passing cold air far longer than it was designed to. Do the dollar bill test around all four sides of each door, and press the door light switch to confirm the interior light actually goes out when the door closes.

When to call a pro
If the damper moves freely, the thermistor checks out against the chart, and the cabinet still runs below 34°F, the main control board is misreading or misfiring and that is a board-level diagnosis. Boards run $150–$400 in parts alone and are worth having a technician confirm before you buy one, since a board is rarely returnable once installed.
