Washer Won't Drain — Work the Blockage Path in Order

A washer that will not drain has a blockage somewhere along a short, entirely traceable path: tub, sump, tub-to-pump hose, pump, drain hose, standpipe, house drain. The mistake almost everyone makes is buying a pump first. Work the path in physical order from the drum outward, and in most cases you will find a sock or a handful of lint long before you reach anything electrical. Start by getting the standing water out, because you cannot inspect anything until the tub is empty.

Read this first

  • Unplug the washer before opening any panel. A drum full of water and a live 120-volt appliance on a wet floor is a genuine shock hazard.
  • Drain the machine before tipping or moving it — a full tub adds well over a hundred pounds and the water goes straight into the cabinet electronics when you tilt it.
  • Expect more water than you think. A front-loader holds a gallon or more behind the pump filter cap alone, and it comes out faster than a small pan can take it.
  • Do not defeat a lid switch or door lock to force a drain. They exist to stop the drum spinning while the machine is open.

Step by step

  1. Get the water out first, the safe way

    On a front-loader, open the small access panel at the lower front. Most have a short grey drain spout tucked beside the filter cap — pull it out, remove its plug, and let the tub empty into a shallow pan, refilling the pan repeatedly rather than trying to catch it all at once. If there is no spout, crack the filter cap a quarter turn at a time and let it seep. On a top-loader, disconnect the drain hose from the standpipe, hold it high, then lower it into a bucket on the floor and let the machine siphon itself empty. Never tip a full machine.

  2. Read the stored error code before you dismantle anything

    A drain fault code tells you whether the machine detected a long drain, no drain at all, or a water level that never fell — three different meanings. Whirlpool and Maytag machines commonly report a drain fault in the F21 or F9E1 family, LG uses OE, Samsung uses 5E or nd, and Bosch and Electrolux have their own equivalents. Look the code up against your specific model rather than a generic list, because the same letters mean different things across brands. The distinction that matters most is whether the control thinks the pump is running and the water is not leaving, or whether it believes the pump is not running at all.

  3. Clear the pump filter and coin trap

    This is where the fault usually is on a front-loader. Behind the filter cap sits a screw-in strainer that catches everything the drum lets through. Pull it and expect coins, hair ties, buttons, underwire, pet hair and a compacted grey felt of lint. Clean the filter and then reach into the empty housing with a finger and sweep it out, because the obstruction is often sitting just past the filter rather than in it. Look through the opening with a flashlight — you should be able to see the pump impeller. Refit the cap by hand, straight and not cross-threaded, or the machine will leak from exactly this spot next cycle.

  4. Check the drain hose, the standpipe height and siphoning

    Pull the machine out and follow the drain hose. Look for a hard kink where it was crushed against the wall, and disconnect it at the standpipe to flush it through with a garden hose or blow through it — a slug of lint and detergent gel usually collects at the low point. Then check the geometry. The hose should only enter the standpipe six to eight inches; pushed deeper it seals against the pipe and siphons the tub empty as fast as the machine fills it, which reads as a machine that never holds water rather than one that never drains. Manufacturers also specify a minimum standpipe height, often around 30 inches — a hose draped into a low bucket or a shallow sink will not drain properly.

  5. Rule out the house drain before blaming the washer

    A washer pump moves water far faster than a partially blocked drain line can accept it. If the standpipe backs up and overflows during drain, or if the kitchen sink gurgles when the washer empties, the fault is in your plumbing and no washer part will fix it. Test it directly: put the drain hose into a large bucket or a floor drain instead of the standpipe and run a drain cycle. If the machine empties happily into the bucket, you have a clogged or poorly vented drain line and you want a plumber, not an appliance technician.

  6. Listen to the pump — humming and silence mean different things

    Run a drain or spin cycle and listen at the lower front of the machine. A distinct hum or buzz with no water moving means the pump is being powered but the impeller cannot turn: something is jammed in it, or the motor has seized. Complete silence means the pump is not being energised at all, which sends you toward the wiring, the door lock circuit or the control rather than the pump itself. A pump that runs, sounds normal, and still moves nothing usually has a broken impeller — the plastic vanes shear off the shaft and spin freely. Unplug the machine, reach the impeller through the filter opening, and turn it by hand: it should rotate with light resistance and no side-to-side play.

  7. Check the tub-to-pump hose

    This is the blockage everyone misses. The corrugated hose running from the bottom of the outer tub to the pump inlet is wide enough to swallow a sock, a face cloth or a baby's bib, which then wedges at the bend and lets only a trickle past. Unplug the machine, put the pan down, loosen the spring clamp at each end and pull the hose off. Squeeze along its length — you will feel a solid lump if something is in there — and flush it through. While it is off, check the tub outlet itself for a plug of lint, and check the corrugations for splits, because a hose that has been strained often leaks after you refit it.

  8. Test the lid switch, door lock and pressure switch

    If the pump is silent and physically free, look at what tells the machine it is allowed to drain. A top-loader will not drain or spin with the lid switch open — press it by hand with a pen and listen for a click, then test it for continuity with a meter, because a switch can click and still not make contact. A front-loader needs the door lock to confirm engagement. Finally, check the pressure switch and its air dome hose: the thin clear tube running from the bottom of the tub up to the control senses water level, and if it is blocked with detergent sludge or has come off its spigot, the machine believes the tub is already empty and never bothers to pump.

When to call a pro

If the drain path is completely clear, the pump impeller turns freely, and the pump is still silent when the machine calls for drain, the fault is in the wiring harness, the motor control or the main board — and boards run $150–$400, are rarely returnable once fitted, and are not worth buying on a guess. A burnt-plastic smell from the pump area means the motor has failed and, more importantly, that something ran it stalled for a long time, so find the obstruction before fitting the new part. Water backing up out of the standpipe is a plumbing job, not an appliance repair.
