A washer that starts its cycle, sits there, and then either times out or throws a fill fault is telling you that water is not arriving fast enough. Machines measure the fill by pressure or by flow, not by time, so they will wait patiently and then complain. The restriction is nearly always upstream of the valve — a tap that never got turned back on, or a silted inlet screen — and both are free to fix.

- Never leave a machine in service if the inlet valve will not close fully — a valve that weeps keeps filling an unattended machine and floods the room. Shut the taps until it is replaced.
- Have a bucket and towels ready; the hoses hold water even after the taps are off.
Step by step
Check both taps are actually open
Hot and cold both need to be fully open, even on a cold-only wash, because many machines blend to hit a target temperature and will not proceed without both. Taps get shut off after a leak scare, after a plumber visits, or when a machine is moved, and nobody remembers. Open each one fully, then back it off a quarter turn so it does not seize in the open position.
Test what the hoses actually deliver
Shut the taps, unscrew both fill hoses from the back of the machine, put the ends in a bucket, and open each tap for five seconds. You want a strong, immediate gush from both. A dribble from one means the problem is that tap, its hose, or the house supply — not the washer. This single test splits the diagnosis cleanly in half and takes two minutes.
Clean the inlet screens
Look into the two threaded inlet ports on the back of the machine with a flashlight. Each has a fine mesh screen designed to catch grit, and they clog with scale, sand and pipe debris — especially after any plumbing work in the house, which flushes sediment through the lines. Pick the screens out carefully with needle-nose pliers or flush them in place, scrub them with an old toothbrush, and refit them. Never run the machine without them.
Note which temperature fails
Run a hot-only cycle, then a cold-only cycle, and see which one fills. The inlet valve is really two solenoids in one body. If cold fills and hot does not, the hot solenoid or the hot supply is the fault and you have narrowed it to half the valve. If neither fills but both hoses gush into a bucket, the whole valve or the signal reaching it is suspect.
Confirm the door lock or lid switch is satisfied
Most machines will not admit a drop of water until the door lock has engaged or the lid switch has made. On a front-loader, listen for the lock to click a few seconds after start and check for a lock icon on the display. On a top-loader, press the lid switch plunger by hand and listen for a click. A machine that appears to have a fill problem often has a lock problem instead, and the lock is the cheaper part.
Test the inlet valve solenoids
With the machine unplugged, pull the connectors off the valve and measure the resistance of each solenoid coil with a multimeter. Most read somewhere in the 500 to 1,500 ohm range, and an open reading condemns that coil. If both coils read fine and water gushes from the hoses but nothing enters the tub, listen for a buzz at the valve when you press start — a buzz with no water means the valve is energised but its internal screen or diaphragm is blocked.
Check the pressure switch and its air hose
The water level pressure switch senses air pressure in a small tube running from the bottom of the outer tub. If that tube is kinked, split, disconnected, or has water or detergent sludge trapped in it, the switch tells the control the tub is already full and the machine never opens the valve. Pull the tube, blow it clear, check for cracks at the fittings, and make sure it rises without dips where water can collect.
Read the stored error code
Enter diagnostic mode using the sequence in your owner's manual or the tech sheet behind the console or lower panel, and note any stored codes. Fill-related codes look different across brands — Whirlpool machines often report F8 E1 or LF for a long fill, LG reports IE, Samsung reports 4C or 4E — and each points to a specific link in the chain. Write the code down before clearing it.

When to call a pro
If the taps gush, the screens are clean, the door lock engages, the valve coils test good and the pressure tube is clear but the machine still will not fill, the fault is in the main control board or the harness between it and the valve. Boards run $150–$400 and are not returnable once fitted, so paying for a measured diagnosis is usually cheaper than guessing. Low or intermittent household water pressure, or a shared line that drops when another fixture runs, is a plumber's problem rather than an appliance one.
