Before you chase a fault, know that modern machines deliberately deliver much cooler water than older ones did. Many blend hot and cold on every setting, and a warm wash on a current machine can be genuinely tepid by design. So the first job is to establish whether you have a machine behaving to specification or a hot supply that is not arriving at all — and the test that separates them takes ten minutes with a thermometer and a bucket.

- Shut both supply taps and unplug the washer before disconnecting a hose or opening a panel.
- Hot supply water can scald. Let the line cool or wear gloves before opening a hot fitting.
- Do not raise a domestic water heater above its safe setting to compensate for a washer problem — scald risk at every tap in the house rises with it.
- Have towels and a bucket ready; both hoses hold water.
Step by step
Measure the water actually entering the machine
Shut both taps, unscrew the hot fill hose from the back of the machine into a bucket, open the hot tap fully, and run it for thirty seconds. Measure the temperature of what comes out with a kitchen thermometer, and time roughly how long the bucket takes to fill. This tells you two things at once: whether hot water reaches the machine at all, and whether the hot side flows as freely as the cold. Repeat on the cold side for comparison.
Check both taps are fully open and the hoses are on the right ports
Laundry taps get closed during other work and never reopened, and a half-open tap on the hot side gives you a machine that fills mostly cold because the cold side wins the race. Then confirm the hoses are on the correct ports — hot to H, cold to C. Hoses swapped during an installation or a move produce a machine that runs hot on cold cycles and cold on hot ones, which is a distinctive and often overlooked tell.
Clean the inlet screens
With the hoses off, look into the two inlet ports on the back of the machine. Each has a fine mesh screen, and the hot side clogs faster because hot water carries more dissolved mineral out of solution and because old hot lines shed more scale. Pick each screen out carefully with pliers or a small hook, rinse it, and refit it — do not leave them out, they protect the valve. A blocked hot screen alone will produce cold fills on every cycle.
Understand what your machine calls hot
Look up what your model actually does on each temperature setting. Many machines temper the hot fill with cold on every cycle to protect fabrics and meet efficiency rules, and some only allow a genuinely hot fill on a sanitise or heavy-duty cycle. Machines with an internal heater fill cold and heat in the drum, so the fill hose stays cool by design and nothing is wrong. Check the manual before you diagnose a machine that is doing what its designers intended.
Check the water heater and the distance to it
Measure the temperature at the laundry tap itself, not at a kitchen sink. If the laundry is a long run from the water heater, the first part of every fill is the cold water that has been sitting in the pipe, and on a short fill that can be most of it. Check the heater is set to a safe but adequate temperature and that its recovery is keeping up if someone showers before the wash. Running the laundry tap for a moment before starting the machine is a legitimate workaround.
Test the hot solenoid on the inlet valve
The inlet valve has one solenoid coil per inlet. With the machine unplugged, unplug the connectors and measure the resistance of each coil with a multimeter, then compare the hot coil against the cold one — they should read broadly similar, and an open reading on the hot coil means it is dead. A valve with one working side is common, and the valve is replaced as an assembly rather than repaired. Listen too: a buzz on the hot inlet with no water usually means a blocked screen rather than a dead coil.
Check the temperature sensor on machines that blend
Machines that mix to a target temperature read the incoming water with a thermistor and adjust the two valves accordingly. A sensor reading warmer than reality makes the control cut the hot side back, producing consistently cool fills across every setting. With the power off, unplug the sensor and measure its resistance against the chart in your model's service documentation. It is an inexpensive part compared with the control board people often replace instead.

When to call a pro
If both coils test good, the screens are clear, the supply is genuinely hot at the tap and the machine still will not draw hot water, the control board is not energising the hot valve and that is a measurement worth paying for rather than guessing at. Call a plumber rather than an appliance technician if the hot supply at the laundry tap is weak or cold — that is a water heater or plumbing problem and no washer part will fix it. If the machine has an internal heater and never heats, that is a heater, thermistor or board diagnosis and worth a technician on any machine still worth repairing.
