Before assuming a fault, know that a modern high-efficiency washer is designed to take much longer than the machine it replaced, and the time shown on the display is an estimate that recalculates as the cycle goes. What is not designed is a cycle that used to take an hour and now takes three. That difference almost always comes from the machine repeating something: refilling because it detected suds, retrying a spin it could not balance, or waiting on a fill or a drain that is slower than it should be. Find out what it is repeating and you have found the fault.
Read this first
- Unplug the washer and close both supply valves before disconnecting a hose or opening a panel.
- Have towels and a shallow pan ready — the fill hoses and the pump filter both hold water.
- Do not disable or ignore a repeated out-of-balance retry by loading the machine tighter. The retries are protecting the bearings.
- A washer full of water is extremely heavy. Drain it before moving or tipping it.
Step by step
Watch a cycle and note where the time goes
Stand with the machine through a cycle, or check on it every ten minutes, and write down what it is doing when the clock stalls. A machine sitting on a fill step for a long time is a water supply problem. One that fills, drains and fills again repeatedly is dealing with suds. One that spins up, slows, redistributes and tries again is fighting an unbalanced load. One that stalls at the end of a wash before draining is dealing with a restriction. Each of those sends you somewhere completely different.
Check what cycle is actually selected
The normal or eco cycle on most HE machines is the long one, because low water use and long tumble time is how it cleans without a full tub. Extra rinse, sanitise, heavy soil, steam and pre-wash options all add substantial time, and any of them can be left on from a previous load. Look at what is lit before you diagnose anything. Then run a short or quick cycle as a comparison — if that finishes in a sensible time, the machine is healthy and the cycle choice was the answer.
Cut the detergent dose right back
Oversudsing is the cause to eliminate first, because the machine responds to it by adding whole extra drain and rinse steps, which is exactly how an hour becomes three. When the control detects excess suds it adds drain and rinse steps to clear them, and each one adds real time. Too much detergent, or a non-HE detergent in an HE machine, does this reliably. Use one to two tablespoons of HE detergent for a normal load — genuinely that little — and run a rinse-only cycle first to clear the residue already in the machine before judging the result.
Time your actual fill rate
Close the supply valve, disconnect a fill hose into a bucket, open the valve fully, and time how long it takes to deliver a measured amount. Do it on both hot and cold. A slow delivery means the machine will sit waiting on every fill, and every fill in every cycle is extended. If one temperature is much slower than the other, the problem is on that side — usually the inlet screen. If both are slow, the problem is household pressure or a partly closed stop valve.
Clean the inlet screens
With the hoses off, look into the inlet ports on the back of the machine. There is a fine mesh screen in each, and they clog with pipe scale, grit and rubber shed from ageing hoses. Pick each screen out carefully with pliers or a small hook, rinse it, and refit it — do not leave them out, since they protect the valve. Check the rubber washers in the hose couplings at the same time, and replace fill hoses that are more than a few years old while you have them off.
Deal with out-of-balance retries
Every retry costs minutes. A single heavy item — a bath mat, a comforter, a pair of jeans in a light load — migrates to one side, the machine detects the imbalance, slows, redistributes and tries again, sometimes many times. Wash bulky items alone or in pairs, avoid mixing one heavy item with light ones, and check the machine is level with all four feet firmly on the floor and locked. A machine that rocks will fail balance checks that a level one passes.
Check the drain path
A partially restricted drain stretches every drain step, and there are several in a cycle. Clean the pump filter on a front-loader, check the drain hose for kinks and for being pushed too far into the standpipe, and confirm the standpipe itself is not backing up. The tell is a machine that drains, but slowly, and then waits before moving on — the control is holding until its pressure sensor reports the tub empty, and a slow drain makes it wait every time.
Check the pressure switch air hose and read the code
The machine measures water level through a small tube running from the base of the tub to a pressure switch or sensor. That tube collects lint, scum and sometimes water, and once it does the machine misreads the level — filling longer than needed, or refusing to move on. Find it, disconnect it, and blow it clear. Then put the machine into diagnostic mode using the sequence in your model documentation and read any stored code, because a code pointing at fill, drain or the level sensor turns all of the above into a five-minute job.

When to call a pro
Call a plumber, not an appliance technician, if the fill rate test shows genuinely low pressure at the taps or a stop valve that will not open fully — that is a household plumbing issue and no washer part will fix it. Call an appliance technician when the detergent dose is right, the screens are clear, the drain runs freely and the level sensing tube is clear but the machine still stretches or repeats steps, since that points at the pressure sensor or the control board. If the long cycles arrived together with a new noise on spin, deal with the noise first — that is a bearing conversation and it changes the maths on whether the machine is worth repairing.
