Ice Maker Not Making Ice — Full Diagnostic Sequence

An ice maker that has stopped completely is a sequence problem: the machine needs a signal to start, water at adequate pressure, a clear path for that water, and a cold enough freezer to trigger the harvest. Break any link and you get zero ice with no error message. Work the chain in order, and give the machine a full 24 hours after each change before you judge whether it worked — a healthy household ice maker only produces a batch every 90 minutes or so.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the ice maker is switched on

    Start with the free check. Older units use a wire bail arm — up means off, down means on — and it gets knocked up by a bag of frozen peas constantly. Newer units use a switch or a control panel setting. On models with an infrared bin sensor rather than a bail arm, check that nothing in the freezer is blocking the beam across the ice bucket, because an obstructed sensor makes the machine think the bin is permanently full.

  2. Measure the freezer temperature

    An ice maker will not begin a harvest cycle until the mould thermostat sees roughly 15°F or colder, and a freezer running at 15 to 20°F will make ice extremely slowly or not at all. Put a thermometer in the freezer and read it after eight hours: you want 0 to 5°F. If it is warmer, the ice maker is not your problem — you have a refrigeration or airflow fault to fix first, and the ice will come back on its own once you do.

  3. Check the water filter's age

    Filters are rated for about six months or 200 to 300 gallons, and a clogged one starves the ice maker before it affects anything you would notice at the dispenser. Replace it and purge two gallons through the dispenser to clear the air. If you have recently fitted an off-brand cartridge, that is worth a second look — dimensionally close aftermarket filters restrict flow badly and are a very common cause of an ice maker that quit right after a filter change.

  4. Verify supply and pressure

    Make sure the saddle or quarter-turn valve behind the fridge or under the sink is fully open. Then test flow: hold a measuring cup under the water dispenser for ten seconds. You should get roughly two thirds of a cup or more. Much less than that means low pressure — a fridge needs at least 20 psi. Homes on reverse osmosis systems are a frequent problem here; RO output often falls below what a fridge needs unless a booster pump is fitted.

  5. Look for a frozen fill tube

    The fill tube is the small plastic tube that delivers water into the back of the ice mould. When the freezer runs very cold or a previous fill dribbled, a plug of ice forms in it and blocks every subsequent fill. Pull the ice bucket, look at the tube entering the ice maker at the rear, and if you see ice, thaw it with a hair dryer on low for five to ten minutes. Catch the meltwater with a towel. If it refreezes within days, the underlying cause is usually low water pressure making the valve dribble rather than pulse.

  6. Test the water inlet valve

    The inlet valve at the lower rear of the fridge is what actually admits water on command. With the fridge unplugged, unplug its connector and measure the coil resistance with a multimeter — most read between about 200 and 500 ohms, and an open reading means a dead coil. Also check the small filter screen inside the valve inlet, which silts up and chokes flow to a trickle. A valve that buzzes without delivering water usually has a blocked screen rather than a dead coil.

  7. Force a harvest cycle

    Most ice makers have a test mode: on many modular units, briefly bridging two specific terminals on the module's test header, or pressing a recessed test button, drives one full cycle. Consult your model's tech sheet. Watch what happens. If the ejector arms sweep but no water arrives, the fault is upstream at the valve, tube or supply. If nothing moves at all, the module or its motor has failed.

  8. Fill the mould by hand as a final test

    Pour four to six ounces of water directly into the ice mould with a measuring cup, close the freezer, and wait two hours. If the machine harvests those cubes normally, everything from the mould onwards works and your fault is definitively in the water supply chain. If it never harvests, the ice maker module, its thermostat, or its heater has failed and the assembly needs replacing.

When to call a pro

If the module fails its test cycle, replacing an ice maker assembly is a $90 to $220 part and is a moderate DIY job on most models — two screws and a wiring harness. Call a technician if the freezer cannot hold 5°F, since that is a refrigeration fault and possibly a sealed-system one requiring EPA Section 608 certification, or if the fault turns out to be in the main control board rather than the ice maker itself. Low household water pressure is a plumber's problem, not an appliance one.
