A dispenser that delivers nothing while the bin is visibly full is a delivery fault, not a production fault, which is good news because it means the water supply, the valve and the ice maker module are all working. What has failed is somewhere in the short chain between the bin and your glass: the ice itself has fused into a block, the auger is not turning, the chute is blocked or frozen, or the dispenser is not being told to run. Test that chain in order and you will find it without pulling the ice maker out.
Read this first
- Unplug the refrigerator before removing the ice bin housing, the dispenser front panel, or testing the auger motor.
- Never put a hand or a utensil into the ice bin opening or the chute with the appliance plugged in. The auger has enough torque to break bones and it starts without warning.
- Thaw a frozen chute or flap with a hair dryer on low only — never a heat gun, and never boiling water on cold plastic.
- The ice bin is heavier than it looks when it is full, and a bin welded solid is heavier still. Lift it with both hands.
Step by step
Rule out the control lock and the mode
Start with the free fix. Almost every dispenser has a control lock that disables the pad entirely, usually a padlock icon you press and hold for three seconds. Check it is off. Then check the selector — on a combined dispenser, cubed, crushed and water are different paths, and a unit that gives water but no ice narrows things immediately. Try both cubed and crushed: if crushed works and cubed does not, the diverter solenoid in the chute is stuck, which is a specific and useful finding.
Pull the bin out and look at the ice
Take the bin out and look at the cubes. If they have fused into a solid block, the auger simply cannot turn and nothing was ever going to come out. That is a clumping problem with its own causes — a freezer running warm, a leaking door seal, a valve dribbling between cycles, or ice that has sat unused for months. Empty the bin, let any block melt rather than chipping at it, wash and dry the bin, and refit it. If dispensing returns, fix the clumping cause or it will happen again.
Check the bin is properly seated on the drive
Look at the back of the bin for the drive coupling — usually a splined or D-shaped socket that engages a shaft in the rear wall of the freezer or the door housing. Turn it by hand and check it moves. Then refit the bin and push it firmly until it seats; a bin sitting a centimetre proud engages nothing, and this is very common after someone has taken the bin out to clear a jam. Look at the splines on both the bin coupling and the drive shaft for rounding.
Clear the chute and check the flap
Shine a light up into the dispenser chute from below. A single cube wedged sideways at the top of the chute blocks everything behind it, and a chute that has iced over from warm room air condensing does the same. Clear any obstruction by hand with the appliance unplugged, then thaw ice with a hair dryer on low. Check the flap at the bottom of the chute swings shut cleanly under its own spring — a flap held open lets warm air straight up the chute and guarantees it ices again.
Listen for the auger motor
Refit the bin, press the pad, and listen carefully with an ear near the freezer door. A motor whirring with no ice arriving means the auger is turning but the ice is bridged or the coupling has rounded off. A distinct clunk or a stalled hum means the motor is trying against a jam. Complete silence means the motor is not being powered, and that points at the dispenser switch, the door switch, or the control rather than the motor itself.
Test the dispenser actuator and switch
Remove the dispenser front panel and find the micro switch behind the paddle or pad. Press it by hand and listen for a distinct click, then unplug the appliance and test it for continuity with a multimeter. A worn actuator arm that no longer reaches the switch is a common and inexpensive failure, and so is a switch whose contacts have burned. While you are in there, check the door switch as well — most dispensers are disabled while the door is open, and a stuck door switch disables them permanently.
Test the auger motor directly
With the appliance unplugged and the bin out, find the auger motor behind the bin housing — on French-door models it usually lives in the freezer drawer housing or the door assembly. Unplug its connector and measure the winding resistance with a multimeter; an open reading means a dead motor. You can also check the auger turns freely by hand. A motor that reads correctly but never runs sends you back to the switch and the control board rather than to a new motor.

When to call a pro
If the bin is loose ice, the coupling engages, the chute is clear and the switch tests good but the auger never turns, the fault is the motor or the dispenser control board. Both are worth measuring before buying, since dispenser boards run $120 to $300 and are rarely returnable once fitted. Call a technician if the ice maker is built into a door assembly you would have to dismantle to reach the auger, which is awkward and easy to damage. If the underlying cause turns out to be a freezer that cannot hold temperature, deal with that first — and any sealed-system work legally requires EPA Section 608 certification.
