There are two completely different kinds of range hood noise, and telling them apart saves an afternoon. Air noise is a broad rushing sound that rises smoothly with fan speed and is largely a function of how much air you are moving through how small a duct — that is physics, and cleaning will not change it much. Mechanical noise is a rattle, buzz, whine or knock, and that is a part doing something it should not. Everything below targets the second kind.

- Switch off the breaker before reaching into the blower housing — most hoods are hardwired and the hood's own switch does not isolate them.
- Blower wheel vanes are thin, sharp and coated in hardened grease. Wear gloves.
- Never seal duct joints with cloth duct tape. Use foil tape rated for the application; cloth tape dries out, falls off, and is not fire-rated.
- Do not work on a ladder over a hot cooktop.
Step by step
Separate airflow noise from mechanical noise
Run the hood through every speed and listen. A sound that rises and falls smoothly with speed and has no distinct character is air noise, and the answer to that is duct sizing rather than repair. A rattle, a periodic knock, a metallic buzz, or a whine at one particular speed is mechanical. Also note whether the noise appeared suddenly, which points at something coming loose, or crept up over years, which points at grease and bearings.
Check the filters are properly seated
The single most common rattle in a range hood is a grease filter that is not clipped in, is slightly the wrong size, or has been refitted the wrong way round after a wash. Take each filter out and refit it, confirming it locks in and does not move when you tap it. Baffle filters in particular have a right way up, and a baffle fitted upside down both rattles and drains grease back onto the cooktop.
Degrease the blower wheel
Kill the breaker, take the filters out, and look at the blower wheel with a flashlight. On a hood that has never been cleaned, every vane carries a thick coat of hardened grease — and because it does not deposit evenly, the wheel ends up out of balance and buzzes at speed. Many blower assemblies unclip and lift out for soaking in hot water and degreaser. Clean the housing and the intake while it is out. This step alone often transforms both noise and airflow.
Check the wheel is tight on its shaft
With the wheel clean, check its hub. Wheels work loose on the motor shaft, and a wheel that has slipped even slightly wobbles and knocks. Check the retaining screw or clip, and spin the wheel by hand watching the vane tips against the housing — they should stay an even distance all the way round. A cracked vane, a missing balance clip, or a hub that has split means replacing the wheel, which is $20 to $80.
Check the damper flap and the exterior cap
A flapping or clattering noise, particularly when it is windy or when the hood shuts off, is a backdraft damper. There is usually one where the hood meets the duct and a second at the exterior cap. Grease welds them partly open, and a bent flap will chatter in the airstream. Clean both, check each swings freely and falls closed under its own weight, and replace a bent or broken one — dampers are $10 to $40.
Check the duct joints and hangers
A duct that has come partly apart, or a section that is unsupported and resonating, produces a booming or buzzing that seems to come from everywhere. Where you can access the run, check the joints are properly made and taped with foil tape, and that the duct is supported at intervals rather than hanging on the hood. A flexible section vibrating against a joist is a classic and easily fixed source.
Check the motor mounts and bearings
With the power off, spin the motor shaft by hand. It should turn freely and smoothly; a notchy, gritty or stiff feel means the bearings have dried out and the motor is on its way out. Then check the rubber mounting grommets that isolate the motor from the housing — those harden and crack with age, letting motor vibration transmit straight into the hood body as a hum you feel as much as hear.
Understand what the hood was ever going to be
If everything is clean, tight and balanced and the hood is still loud, look at the specification. Hoods are rated in sones, and a budget 400-CFM hood on 6-inch duct is simply going to be loud on high. Undersized ducting makes it worse — a hood specified for 6-inch duct running on 4-inch will roar. Remote or in-line blowers mounted in the roof or outside are the real answer to noise, and that is an installation decision rather than a repair.

Still not fixed
When to call a pro
Call a technician if the motor bearings are dry or the motor hums without turning, since motor replacement means dismantling the blower assembly overhead — reasonable on a wall hood, genuinely awkward on a chimney or island installation. Bring in a professional for duct rework, for a run inside a wall or ceiling you cannot inspect, and for any move to a remote in-line blower. If you find grease has escaped the hood into the duct or the ceiling cavity, treat that as urgent — it is a fire load in a place nobody inspects.
