Downdraft Vent Won't Rise or Lower — Free the Lift

A downdraft vent is a ventilation unit that rises out of the countertop behind or beside the hob and drops back down when you are finished, and the raising mechanism is what usually fails. Designs vary considerably — some use a motor and a geared rack, some a cable and pulley, some a screw drive — so the first job is to find documentation for your specific model rather than assume. What is consistent across all of them is that grease and debris on the sliding surfaces cause more of these failures than any electrical part.

Read this first

  • Switch off the breaker feeding the downdraft before reaching into the cabinet below or removing any panel. Downdraft units are hardwired and the controls do not isolate them.
  • Never put fingers into the slot the vent rises through while the unit has power. The lift mechanism has no idea what is in its way.
  • Let the cooktop cool completely and confirm every burner is off before working at the hob surface.
  • Do not force a stuck vent up or down by hand against the drive. On a geared lift you will strip the drive; on a cable lift you will derail the cable, and both are far worse than the original fault.

Step by step

  1. Cut the power and look at where it stopped

    Switch off the breaker, then note the exact state: fully down and refusing to move, part way up and stalled, or up and refusing to come down. A unit that stalls at the same point every time is being obstructed or is hitting a mechanical bind at that point. A unit that does nothing at all in either direction points at power, the control, or the motor. Photograph the position before you touch anything.

  2. Check the obvious obstructions first

    Look along the slot the vent rises through and at the vent body itself. A pan handle overhanging the slot, a trivet, a chopping board, or a utensil dropped behind the hob will stop the lift dead, and so will a splash of something sugary that has set in the slot. Check the grease filter is properly seated in the vent body — a filter sitting proud catches on the counter edge on the way down and is a very common cause of a unit that rises but will not retract.

  3. Clean and lubricate the sliding surfaces

    This is where most of these faults live. The telescoping vent body runs on slides or in channels, and years of grease-laden air condensing on them turns into a sticky varnish that binds the whole assembly. With the power off and the vent in whatever position you can reach, clean every sliding surface you can get to with hot water and a degreaser and a soft brush, then dry them and apply a light silicone spray. Do not use oil or general-purpose grease, which collects dust and makes the bind worse within months.

  4. Feel for the bind by hand, gently

    With the power still off, try moving the vent through its travel by hand with light, even pressure — not force. On many designs it will move with the drive disengaged or against modest resistance, and what you are feeling for is whether the bind is smooth and even, which suggests dirt, or sharp and localised, which suggests something mechanical. If it will not move at all with gentle pressure, stop pushing and open the cabinet below instead.

  5. Open the cabinet below and inspect the drive

    The lift motor and its drive live in the cabinet under the hob. Clear the cabinet out and look with a flashlight for the mechanism, whatever form it takes. Check for a snapped or slipped belt, a cable that has jumped its pulley, a stripped section on a rack or a lead screw, and for anything stored in the cabinet fouling the assembly — a stack of pans against the lift housing is a genuinely common cause. Look for shed plastic or metal particles below the drive.

  6. Check the ducting is not fouling the travel

    Downdrafts duct out through the cabinet base or the wall behind, usually with a section of flexible or rigid duct that has to accommodate the vent's movement on some designs. A duct that has been crushed by something stored in the cabinet, or a joint that has come apart and dropped into the path, will jam the mechanism. Check the duct run is intact, supported, and clear of the moving parts, and reseal any joint with foil tape rather than cloth tape.

  7. Test the limit and position switches

    The control needs to know when the vent has reached the top and the bottom of its travel, and it uses switches or a position sensor to do it. A failed top switch leaves the motor driving against the stop or refusing to start; a failed bottom switch means it never registers as parked. With the power off, find the switches along the travel path, actuate each by hand, and test for continuity with a multimeter. They are inexpensive parts and a genuinely common cause of a lift that moves partway and stops.

  8. Get the model documentation before ordering anything

    Because the mechanisms differ so much between manufacturers and generations, ordering a lift motor by eye is a good way to buy the wrong part. Find the model and serial plate — usually inside the cabinet on the unit body or under the vent body itself — and get the parts diagram for that number before you buy. It will also tell you whether your design has a documented manual release for lowering a stuck vent, which is worth knowing before you improvise one.

When to call a pro

Lift motor and gearbox replacement is a fair service call on most downdrafts: the assembly is buried in a cabinet, alignment matters, and getting it wrong leaves the vent binding again within months. Call a technician if the drive is stripped, if a cable has derailed, or if the vent is jammed part way up and will not move with the power off. Call an electrician for any hardwired connection you are not equipped to verify dead. Be aware before you commit that parts for older and discontinued downdraft units can be genuinely hard to source, and price the repair against a replacement unit — downdrafts are a substantially more expensive appliance than a wall hood.
