A microwave's door is a precision-engineered part of the shielding — the metal mesh in the window, the choke channel around the perimeter, and the latch hooks that hold it dead square all work together to keep the energy inside. Step by step

  1. Take it out of service first

    Unplug it, and if it is over-the-range and hardwired, switch off its breaker. Do not run it once to see whether it still works. A door that will not close squarely may still latch far enough to satisfy the primary interlock while leaving a gap in the choke channel, and that is precisely the condition that lets energy escape. Treat this like a gas leak: stop, then diagnose.

  2. Clean the latch area and the door face

    This is the one genuinely DIY fix. Splattered food, hardened sauce and grease build up in the latch holes on the cavity front and on the door's sealing face, and a hard crumb in a latch hole is enough to stop the door seating. Clean both with hot water and a degreaser on a cloth, working cotton buds into the latch slots. Dry everything, then close the door slowly and watch whether it now seats flat all round.

  3. Inspect the latch hooks

    Look at the plastic hooks on the inside face of the door that push into the cavity front. They are the most commonly broken part on a microwave, usually because the door has been pulled open by the handle at an angle for years or slammed. Check for a snapped hook, a cracked base, or a hook that has gone slack. A broken hook means the door is no longer holding itself against the seal, and it is not a part to improvise around.

  4. Check the hinges and the door alignment

    Stand to the side and look at the closed door edge on. It should sit parallel with the cabinet front along its whole height, with an even gap. A door that touches at the top and gaps at the bottom has a sagging or bent hinge, usually from something heavy hanging on an open door. Open and close it slowly and feel for binding. A bent door on a countertop unit generally ends the conversation — that is a replacement.

  5. Inspect the sealing surfaces and the choke channel

    Around the perimeter of the door, on the cavity side, there is a recessed channel — the choke — usually covered by a plastic strip. Its geometry is what traps escaping energy at the door seam. Look for a cracked or missing cover strip, a dented channel, food packed into it, or corrosion. Clean it gently. If it is damaged or the metal is deformed, the unit needs a technician who can test for leakage after any repair.

  6. Note the exact symptom for whoever fixes it

    Before you call anyone, write down what happens. Does the door close but the microwave refuse to start? Does it start and then stop when the door is nudged? Does the unit trip the breaker when the door opens — a classic sign of an interlock monitor switch that has done its job because the primary switch failed? Each of these points at a different part, and telling the technician saves you a diagnostic charge.

  7. Do the replace-or-repair maths honestly

    A countertop microwave costs $90 to $250 new. A door assembly plus interlock switches plus labour and a leakage test lands in the same range or higher, so for a countertop unit replacement is nearly always the rational choice, and the old one should go to appliance recycling rather than the kerb. Over-the-range, drawer and built-in units cost $400 to $1,200 to replace and involve cabinetry, so a $150 to $350 repair on those is well worth having done.

Everything past cleaning the latch area belongs to a technician. Door assemblies, latch boards and interlock switches sit directly beside the high-voltage capacitor, which holds a dangerous charge even unplugged, and a technician will also survey the door for microwave leakage after the repair — something you cannot do without the meter.
