Microwaves are noisy appliances by nature — there is a transformer humming, a cooling fan running flat out, a turntable motor and, on over-the-range units, a ventilation blower. Telling a normal noise from a failing part is mostly a matter of working out where the sound comes from and what it correlates with. Some of the answers are $10 plastic parts you can change in five minutes. Others sit behind the cabinet, which is the one place on this appliance you should not open.

Step by step
Localise the sound before you diagnose it
Put a cup of water in, start a cook, and listen deliberately from the front, the sides and the top. A noise from the base that stops when you lift the glass tray out is the turntable. A steady rush from the back or the top vents is the cooling fan. A low hum that appears the moment cooking starts and disappears when it stops is the transformer, and that is normal. On an over-the-range unit, run the vent fan alone with the oven off — if the noise is there, it is the blower rather than the microwave.
Rule out the turntable first
Take the glass tray and the plastic roller ring out entirely and run a short cook with just a cup of water sitting on the cavity floor. If the noise is gone, you have found it, and the repair is cheap. Wash the tray and ring, wipe the recessed track underneath, spin each roller wheel with a fingertip to check none are seized or flat-spotted, and lift the drive coupler off to check its splines are not rounded. Grit in the track is a common cause of a grinding sound.
Interpret a rattle or a buzz that changes with position
A rattle that changes when you press lightly on the cabinet, the door, or the vent grille is a panel or trim resonating rather than a failing part, and tightening the visible external screws often cures it. On an over-the-range unit, check the mounting bolts and that the unit is sitting properly against the wall plate. A buzz that only appears at certain power levels is usually the transformer cycling on and off, which is how power levels work and is not a fault.
Clean the over-the-range blower
If the noise is the ventilation fan, pull the mesh grease filters and wash them in very hot water with a degreaser, then shine a light up into the blower opening. A squirrel-cage wheel with grease built unevenly on its vanes goes out of balance and produces a growl or a vibration that rises with fan speed. Clean what you can reach through the filter opening. A wheel that is chipped or a motor with dry bearings needs a technician, because it lives inside the cabinet.
Recognise the sounds that mean stop
Three noises should end the test immediately. A sharp crackle or snap with visible flashes is arcing — unplug it and read the guide on microwave sparking before running it again. A sudden loud growl or a heavy buzz that arrives together with food no longer heating usually indicates a failure in the high-voltage circuit. And any noise accompanied by a burning smell or smoke means unplug it now. None of those three is a wait-and-see situation.
Check the cooling fan path
A fan noise that has become louder or rougher is sometimes just an obstruction. With the unit unplugged, look into the rear and side vent slots with a flashlight for debris, and check that nothing is sitting on top of the unit or pressed against the vents. Confirm the exhaust actually blows by holding a tissue at the vent during a one-minute cook. A fan that is audibly running but moving nothing is a blockage or a failing wheel, and both need the cabinet off.
Decide with real numbers
Be honest about the economics before booking anything. Turntable parts — coupler, ring, motor — total under $50 and on most countertop units the motor is behind a small bottom panel, which is a legitimate DIY job. Anything behind the outer cabinet is a service call at $120 to $300, against $90 to $250 for a new countertop microwave. Over-the-range, drawer and built-in units cost $400 to $1,200 to replace and involve cabinetry, so a blower or fan repair on one of those is usually well worth having done.

On a countertop unit, price a replacement before authorising an internal repair; on an over-the-range or built-in unit, the repair almost always wins.
