Gas Burner Burning Yellow — What the Flame Colour Is Telling You

Flame colour is a direct readout of how well gas and air are mixing. A correctly burning cooktop burner shows crisp blue cones with, at most, faint orange tips. A lazy, yellow, floppy flame means the burner is not getting the air it needs, and incomplete combustion produces soot and carbon monoxide. Before you assume the worst, though, one specific thing is harmless and very commonly misread: brief orange flickering caused by dust, salt or humidity in the room air burning in the flame. Learning to tell those apart is most of this diagnosis.

Read this first

  • If you smell gas at any time, do not operate any switch, light or phone in the room. Leave the building and call your gas utility from outside.
  • A yellow, sooty flame is incomplete combustion, and incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide. Fit a working carbon monoxide alarm in the kitchen area. If a CO alarm sounds, get everyone out and call the fire service or the utility.
  • Never drill, ream out or enlarge a burner port or an orifice. Port size is engineered, and changing it changes the gas-air mixture.
  • Converting an appliance between natural gas and propane — orifices, regulator and air settings — is licensed work. It is not a DIY task, and a range running on the wrong fuel is exactly what produces a yellow sooty flame.
  • Let burners cool completely and turn off the gas at the appliance shutoff before removing anything.

Step by step

  1. Learn what a correct flame looks like on your range

    Turn a burner to medium in a dimly lit kitchen and look at it closely. You want a defined blue cone at each port, steady, sitting on the burner rather than lifting off it. Faint orange right at the tips is normal on many ranges. What is not normal is a soft yellow flame with no blue base, a flame that is noticeably taller and lazier than it used to be, or one that leaves black soot on the bottom of a pan. Take a photo now so you have a reference after cleaning.

  2. Rule out harmless orange flicker

    Random orange sparks or a flicker that comes and goes is usually airborne particles burning — dust after cleaning or building work, salt from boiling or seasoning, humidity, or residue from a new range still burning off. The distinguishing feature is that it flickers and moves rather than sitting as a steady yellow flame, and it affects whichever burner happens to be running rather than one specific burner every time. If it appeared after redecorating or a deep clean and fades over days, that is what you are seeing.

  3. Compare every burner

    Light all the surface burners together and look along them. One yellow burner with the rest correct means the fault is in that burner's cap, head or ports — a local problem with a local fix. Every burner yellow at once means something common to all of them: the gas supply, the regulator, or the wrong orifices for the fuel being supplied. That single observation decides whether the rest of this guide is a twenty-minute clean or a call to a licensed technician.

  4. Remove and wash the burner cap and head

    With the burners cold and the appliance shutoff closed, lift off the cap and the burner head. Wash both in hot soapy water with a toothbrush, paying attention to the underside of the cap where boil-overs bake on. Do not put them in a dishwasher unless the manufacturer says you can — detergent can dull and corrode some finishes. Dry both completely before refitting, because a damp burner produces a poor flame and a clicking igniter that will not stop.

  5. Clear every port

    With the head off, look at the ring of small ports around its edge. Blocked or partially blocked ports starve the flame of gas at those points and disturb the mixture at the rest. Work a straightened paperclip or a fine wire gently into each port and clear it — never a toothpick, which breaks off and leaves a blockage you cannot see, and never a drill bit, which enlarges the port. Hold the head up to the light and confirm you can see through every port.

  6. Refit the cap correctly and check the seating

    It is worth doing carefully on its own, because a seating error produces a yellow flame immediately and costs nothing to correct. The cap has to sit flat and fully home on the head, and the head has to sit correctly on its locating pins or in its recess. A cap sitting proud, rotated, or resting on a crumb of baked-on food disturbs the gas-air path and gives an immediate lazy yellow flame. Fit it, then gently press and rotate it to confirm it seats without rocking, and light the burner and check the flame again before moving on.

  7. Check the air shutter on ranges that have one

    Older ranges, and some current models, have an adjustable air shutter at the point where each burner tube meets the gas orifice, controlling how much primary air is drawn in. If a shutter has been knocked closed, or blocked by grease, lint or a spider web in a range that has been idle, the burner runs rich and yellow. Many modern sealed burners have no adjustable shutter at all, so check your model documentation before hunting for one. If yours has them, clean the tube and set them according to the manufacturer's instructions rather than by trial and error.

  8. Ask whether the range is on the right fuel

    A range set up for natural gas and connected to propane, or converted without the correct orifice set and regulator adjustment, burns badly — commonly with yellow sooty flames and black deposits on cookware. This is the case to be honest about, because it is both a genuine carbon monoxide hazard and firmly licensed work. Check the rating plate for the fuel the appliance is configured for and compare it against your actual supply. If they do not match, stop using the range and get a qualified gas technician in.

When to call a pro

Stop and call a licensed gas technician if every burner burns yellow, if the range may be on the wrong fuel or was converted without a proper orifice change, if you find soot deposits on cookware or on the range itself, or if a carbon monoxide alarm has ever sounded. Anything involving orifices, the regulator, the gas valve or a supply connection is licensed trade work and is not a DIY repair in most jurisdictions. If you smell gas, leave the building first and call the utility from outside. Cleaning a single burner is a homeowner job; combustion setup is not.
