Freezers make a lot of normal noise — refrigerant gurgling through the evaporator, plastic cracking as it contracts, an inverter compressor changing speed, water dripping into the drain pan after a defrost. The three sounds that actually mean something is failing are a squeal or chirp from a fan, a repeating click from the start relay, and a rattle from something loose. Identify which of those you have before you open a single panel.

Step by step
Learn what normal sounds like
Popping and cracking as the cabinet cools is thermal expansion in the liner and shelving, and it is normal. A gurgle or a hiss after the compressor stops is refrigerant equalising, also normal. A trickle or sizzle every eight to twelve hours is the defrost cycle melting frost into the drain pan. None of those need fixing, and knowing them stops you chasing a fault that is not there.
Locate the sound before you diagnose it
On an upright frost-free freezer, open the door with the unit running. If the noise gets louder or changes pitch, it is the evaporator fan behind the rear interior panel — on many models that fan stops when the door opens, so sudden silence tells you the same thing. If the door makes no difference and the sound comes from low at the back, you are looking at the condenser fan, the compressor, or the drain pan. A cardboard tube held to your ear works well as a stethoscope.
Squealing or chirping from inside — the evaporator fan
This is the most commonly replaced noisy part in a frost-free freezer. The bearings dry out, or ice contacts the blade. Unplug the unit, remove the rear interior panel, and spin the blade by hand — it should coast freely and silently. Grit, wobble or resistance means the motor is finished. If you find frost the blade is striking, you have a defrost problem as well, and fixing only the fan will not stop the noise coming back.
Clicking every few minutes — the start relay
A click roughly every three to five minutes, sometimes with the room lights dimming briefly, is the start relay trying and failing to start the compressor. Unplug the freezer, pull the relay off the side of the compressor, and shake it. A rattle means the internal contacts have burned out. It is a $12 to $45 part and a ten-minute job, and it is worth doing promptly — a relay that keeps stalling the compressor will eventually destroy it.
Rattling or buzzing from the bottom rear
Pull the rear panel or kick plate and check three things. The drain pan works loose and buzzes against the frame — reseating it or shimming it with adhesive foam usually cures it. The condenser fan blade rattles if a shroud screw has backed out or debris is caught in it. And the compressor mounting grommets harden with age, letting the whole compressor drum against the base. All three are cheap or free.
Level the cabinet and check its clearances
Before ordering any part, put a bubble level on top and level the appliance side to side, tilted very slightly back. Then pull it an inch or two off the wall and away from any adjoining cabinet, and run it. A meaningful share of freezer noise complaints turn out to be resonance between the cabinet and the surrounding structure rather than a failing part, and this step costs nothing but a few minutes.
Check the fan blades and shroud on a chest freezer
Chest freezers usually have no evaporator fan at all — the evaporator tubing is bonded into the walls — so an internal fan noise is not possible on most models. What they do have is a condenser fan on larger units and, on many, a condenser bonded to the outer shell. A chest freezer that has developed a hum or buzz is almost always the compressor mounts, a loose panel, or the unit sitting on an uneven floor.
Growling from inside the compressor — stop and assess
A loud, low-frequency growl or a metallic scraping coming from inside the compressor housing itself means internal wear. That is not a serviceable part; the compressor is replaced as part of the sealed system. Note how long the noise has been present and whether the freezer is still holding 0°F, because that combination decides whether you are dealing with an urgent failure or a noisy unit with life left in it.

Compressor noise means sealed-system work, which legally requires EPA Section 608 certification and typically runs $400 to $900 installed. Weigh that carefully against replacement: a new chest freezer starts around $250 and a new upright around $500, so on an older unit the maths often favours a new appliance. Get a written quote before authorising sealed-system work. Any oily residue on the tubing or evaporator means a refrigerant leak — stop using the unit and call a certified technician.
