A freezer that shows no sign of life is usually not a broken freezer. Chest and upright freezers spend their lives in garages, basements and utility rooms — exactly the places with ground fault protection, shared outlets, and the switch someone flipped while looking for the light. The most expensive possible answer, a failed compressor, is also the least likely one, and it is easy to rule out. Start at the wall and work inward, and deal with the food first, because a full freezer that has been off is a food safety question before it is a repair question.

- Deal with the food before the appliance. If the freezer has been off for an unknown length of time, check the actual temperature of the contents and follow published food-safety guidance rather than guessing what is still safe.
- Never defeat, bypass or remove a GFCI to keep a freezer running. If a GFCI keeps tripping, something is leaking current to earth and that needs finding.
- Unplug the freezer before removing any panel, the control housing, or the compressor cover.
- The start relay and its overload sit on the compressor and can hold a charge. Do not bridge the terminals with a tool.
- Do not use an extension lead or a multi-way adapter for a freezer — it is a common cause of intermittent power loss and a genuine fire risk.
Step by step
Deal with the contents before the appliance
Do not open the door repeatedly while you diagnose. Check the actual temperature of the food with a thermometer pushed between packages rather than judging by the air, and move anything you intend to keep into coolers or a neighbour's freezer if the box is warming. A full freezer holds its temperature considerably longer than a half-empty one, which is worth knowing before you panic. For what is safe to refreeze and what is not, follow published food-safety guidance rather than an estimate — it depends on the temperature the food actually reached.
Check the GFCI, and check it away from the freezer
Check this before anything else on a garage or basement freezer, because a GFCI can cut power to the appliance with no indication at the freezer itself. Ground fault outlets nuisance-trip, and crucially the tripped device is often not the outlet the freezer is plugged into — one GFCI can protect several downstream outlets, and it may be in a bathroom, a garage wall, or the panel itself. Walk the property and press the test and reset button on every GFCI you can find. If the freezer runs afterwards, the question becomes why it tripped, not whether to reset it again.
Test the outlet with something you trust
Plug a lamp or another small appliance you know works into the same outlet, or use an outlet tester which will also tell you about reversed polarity and a missing ground. Then check the breaker: push it fully off and firmly back on, because a partially tripped breaker looks closed and passes nothing. Check as well whether the outlet is controlled by a wall switch — utility rooms and garages often have switched outlets, and that switch gets turned off with the lights.
Inspect the cord and the plug
Unplug the freezer and look at the plug pins and the cord where it leaves the cabinet and where it may have been trapped behind the unit. You are looking for discolouration on the pins, a plug that is loose in the socket, cracked or chafed insulation, and any sign of heat. Freezers sit undisturbed for years and cords get crushed against walls and chewed by pests. If the plug is warm to the touch after running, that is a bad connection and needs fixing rather than living with.
Establish whether anything works at all
With power confirmed at the outlet, plug the freezer in and look for any sign of life: an interior light on an upright, a control panel, a click from the compressor area, or a brief hum. Light but no cooling, or no light but a working compressor, splits the diagnosis immediately — the light tells you power is reaching the cabinet and the fault is downstream in the control or compressor circuit. Nothing at all, with power confirmed at the outlet, points at the cord, the control, or a connection inside the cabinet.
Work the temperature control through its range
Most freezers have a cold control — a dial thermostat with a capillary sensor, or an electronic control on newer units. Turn a mechanical dial slowly from off through to its coldest setting and listen carefully. You should hear a distinct click, and on most units the compressor should start within a few seconds of that click. No click at any position, with power confirmed at its terminals, condemns the control. Check too that the dial has not simply been knocked to off, which happens more often than people admit.
Listen for the start relay clicking
If the compressor tries and fails, the sound is distinctive: a click every few minutes, sometimes with the lights dimming, and a compressor housing that is warm rather than cold. That is the start relay and overload failing to get the compressor running. Unplug the unit, pull the relay from the side of the compressor, and shake it — a rattle means the internal contacts have burned out. It is one of the cheapest parts on the machine and it is very frequently mistaken for a dead compressor.
Check the interior wiring and the control housing
With the unit unplugged, open the control housing and look at the connections: a spade terminal that has worked off, a wire corroded green where damp has got in, or a connector that has browned with heat. Damp environments are hard on these connections, and a garage freezer that has been in place for a decade is a likely candidate. On electronic models, check for a fuse on the control board and inspect the board for a burnt relay or a bulged capacitor before assuming the compressor is at fault.

When to call a pro
Call an electrician rather than an appliance technician if a GFCI keeps tripping after a reset, if other things on the same circuit are affected, or if you find heat damage at the outlet or the plug. Call an appliance technician if the control clicks, the relay is good, and the compressor still does nothing but hum and cut out — that is either a seized compressor or a start capacitor issue, and the compressor is part of the sealed system, which is EPA Section 608 certified work. On a chest or upright freezer past its expected life, get that quote alongside the price of a replacement before authorising anything.
